|

Groan. Before I came to Korean I converted the bulk of my CD collection into MP3 format and then burned it on about 10 CDs. I brought those with me. However, I've noticed a lot of these RW CDs are becoming oxidized, getting all spotty and unplayable. I'm given to understand high humidity can really play havoc with CDs. Anyone else experience this problem? |

CD RWs are not intended to be a durable medium and are easily degraded by heat fluxuations.
If you want durability, you will need to go with gold CDRs. |

Doh. I meant CD-Rs. Actually the RWs seem to be standing up to the humdity better. But, yeah, RWs aren't meant for long term storage. I've also noticed with some CD-Rs the top sides begin to flake off. Ugg. |

How long have you been here???
I've had CDRs for three years that are just fine.
Are you a smoker? |

Not a smoker. I've been here only 4 months. I suspect I bought a cheap brand of CD and now I'm paying for it. I carry some of my CDs around with me. I listen to them on my mp3 CD player. I suspect a lot of the recent rain has had an effect.
Groan. Just a heads up, y'all Buy a good brand of CD if you're planning to bring over your music collection. |

I just recently read a story about "CD rot". Apparently, some older CD's are starting to pit and wear out due to poor manufacturing processes and improper storage & handling:

Not sure if that's related to your problem or not, but it's worth a read. |

i keep all my mp3's on an external hard disk connected to my mac via firewire. i have nearly 90gig of them now.
i lived many years in papua new guinea, where it is DAMN humid and hot most of the time. my cd's all grew mold on them but it cleaned off easily enough. these were store-bought cd's.
what was a real problem was any magnetic medium like diskettes or cassette tapes. a diskette lasts about 24 hours exposed to PNG conditions. i learnt this at great cost.
eventually i learnt to keep all my data storage media - magnetic and optical, in an eskie (cooler to the non-aussies) half filled with silica gel.
i was told the best cd's were the blue imations. anyone know if this is so? |
