I'm looking at some cheap flights to Manila this month. I'm only staying for a few days, and I don't really want to spend them in the city itself. I've never been, but other people tell me it's not all that great. So, given my short timescale, what would be the best place outside of Manila that's not too far away?
Thanks |

Why not get a ticket to Cebu instead? They're the same price. Then you're close to Bohol, Bantayan, Malapascua, etc. |

I bet you can get just as cheap a flight to Hong Kong or Macau. You defeinitely don't want to spend your whole trip in Manila, but the thing about the philippines is that it's hard to travel intra-country as its an archipeligio. So even if the flight to Boracay is just an hour you gotta factor in taxies, shuttle buses, and then the ferry to the island along with a trike to your hotel. So you'll probably spend your first night in manila, travel the next day to the island and when you leave you'll probably want to spend the last night in manila so you don't miss your flight. That's four days of travel. It could be slightly easier if you're going in and out of Cebu though.
Hong Kong has some nice beaches (Repulse Bay) and a ton of sights and history, plus some good hiking. You can take a ferry over to macau for a day as well to see the old world portuguese colony and the new world casinos that take in more revenue than Vegas now. |

Do you like diving?
There is a place called Anilao that is only about a two hour drive from Manila. Nice beach huts...rocky beaches....cheap and good diving.
There is also a place on the way called Tagatay. It's an old volcano that blew it's top and is now a lake. Not much there...but nice views and some good hiking. |

Not true.
Domestic flights in the Philippines are ridiculously cheap. You can fly one-way just about anywhere for about $20. In fact, they just had a promotion on domestic flights for 1 PESO. That's not a typo. |

Flying within the Philippines is the way to go and you definitely don't need to waste a day in Manila to fly somewhere. But land travel can be tedious and slow.
If you're set on flying to Manila and staying on Luzon there are several different places that you can go within a few hours of the city. Lake Taal was really nice but they recently closed it (the day after I hiked it) due to possible volcanic activity. Pinotubo isn't too far away. 100 islands park or whatever it's called to the north. Anilao seems popular with divers and possibly snorkelers but IIRC it's quite expensive.
Or you could head to Hong Kong as mentioned. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought and there was a lot of great hiking. It's a little expensive though. |
