We try to learn their culture and patterns. We even try to assimilate to some degree with the Korean lifestyle - because we have to.
What mannerism / tradition / habit have you tried to get the Korean people to understand or practice themselves?
Personally I ride a motorcycle and in the US (and here), we all wave at each other when we pass one another. This is something I continue here and seem to get about a 25% reciprocation from the other side. I'll keep waving and maybe in 10 years all bikers will all over Korea.
Oh, and I hold doors open for people when they are coming in behind me. (don't really know why this one is not a universal practice everywhere) |

Sarcasm and music.
(In Japan, I instilled They Might Be Giants because none of the karaoke rooms had their songs.) |

This is a big one for me! I also mock the constant nose picking but it doesn't seem to work.
I also hold doors open for people. I was at COEX this weekend and actually had a young ROK Marine wait for me and hold the door. I gave him a deep bow and kamsahamnida as it's probably the first time its ever happened. |

Manners are cultural.
My students almost always cover their mouths when they cough now. I have heard the Korean teacher reminding them, too. I think that's the one I try to pass on the most. And saying please and thank you. |

with the influx of foreign english teachers the highest its ever been, i expect young Koreans to change and adapt new habits rather quickly. Kind of like when Americans poured into Japan after the war in the 50s. I was here when there were hardly any foriegners here besides GIs and a few business peoples.
I cant believe how much the girls like foreign men now. Man, I had a time getting my first Korean gf (in 1996) to just hold my hand!
I always show people around me my hobbies and my passion for them. Thats the one thing I would hope people would learn from my teaching! |
