In America, there are all sorts of prepaid phone options that you can buy and refill anywhere from Radio Shack to 7-11 to the supermarket.

Is there anything similar in Korea? From search, it seems like I would have to go to Itaewon to not only buy a phone, but also to refill it every single time.

Any other options?

Assuming you acquired a working handset 'somehow,' there are a couple of schemes that you can top up through bank transfer with automatic conversion into call credits.
I'm not certain, though, whether those prepaid minutes on sale in Itaewon are compatible with the schemes I've mentioned. And by 'bank transfer,' I assume you have at least the most basic checking account with a bank card and/or internet banking option.
