The related threads are getting old so I am starting a new one. I am looking into doing my MA via distance in either Applied ling or TESOL. I wonder if there is something wrong here. On older threads, costs at USQ and UNE were listed much cheaper, but damn, UNE costs 37.4 million KRW/34,435 USD? Thats what I was told directly from them. I now know programs from the UK are much cheaper so I will now go with a school from there. For example, Univ or Leicester is about 14.1 million KRW. Any one have anything to say about this university or any other UK university concerning their distance MA in Applied ling or TESOL? Id like to know about the University of Birmingham as well. I am still shocked with the UNE price, though. Can someone verify that? The costs listed are for the entire program tuition. I am more into getting it done cheaper than anything else.
Univ of Leicester
Total costs for units= AUD7,930 or USD 13,000 or KRW 14.1 million

UNE
Total costs for tuition= AUD32,128 or USD 34,435 or KRW37.4 million

USQ
Total cost for tuition= AUD15,840 or USD 16,975 or KRW18.4 million

I don't know how you got that figure for UNE, but it's half of that - 16k for the program.

Cheapest I've seen is from Sheffield Hallam at just over 4,500. I'd choose Birmingham or Aston ahead of it though.

In their email they wrote The tuition fee for the Master of Applied Linguistics is AUD16,065 for the first year. The tuition fees for each Unit costs AUD4,016.25.

There are 8 units total to complete the program so 4,016AUD multiply by 8 = 32,128AUD or 34,870USD. The 16,065 AUD for the first year is for 4 units.

Here is their page with the info on number of units.

Whoever wrote the email wrote it wrong/confusing. The TOTAL cost is 16k. I'm in the program now, and it cost me a little over 4k for the first 2 classes. Also, they are citing you as if you were full time. Full time, the program takes one year, minus a thesis. Doing it part time, 2 classes per semester, will take 2 years, but it's still just 16k total.

Are you sure?

Nearly all the Uni's in the UK will accept you ( for a TESOL masters) if you have over two years experience.

i think he is getting a "first" confused with a "first degree", which means an undergrad degree...

Are you sure about that?
Entry requirements for MA in TESOL at SH from their website:
Quote:

Applicants must have

 a degree or equivalent qualification

at least two years experience of teaching in the profession

be currently teaching in the field

and should fulfil one of the following criteria

have successfully completed the Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL, Cambridge CELTA or equivalent

English language skills equivalent to IELTS level 7.0

Entrants who have successfully completed a recognised professional teaching diploma in TESOL, for example the Trinity College Licentiate Diploma or Cambridge (DELTA) are exempt from stage one.

As stated above, most universities in the UK for a lot of MA courses (for most subjects) don't give a rat's ass about your marks (as long as it's not a third). They usually only really care about your ability to pay the fees.

i'm doing my masters at Birmingham (red brick) it's in TESOL. I got a 2.2 many moons ago, they don't give a rat's ass, it's all about paying I believe. It's gunna cost me seven and a half sterling over two and a half years, that includes my dissertation. After that I'm planning on working at the better unis in Korea and then I'll head to the Middle East for a change more likely!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

For Birmingham, do you pay as you do each module or do you have to pay a certain amount before you start?

Aside from Sheffield Hallam, are there any other universities anywhere (USA/UK/Ireland/Australia/NZ/South Africa/Canada) offering an MA TESOL/Applied Linguistics/English Education on the cheap?

Look forward to seeing some names and prices... Smile

Nice! I've got enough free time at school so might as well do something productive! Pretty afforadable like that, just have to skip a vacation or two.

The University of Sunderland had a course for around 4000-5000 over 1 1/2 years. No idea of the quality though.
