Is this something that happens often? Its completly ridiculous. I keep being asked for a 500 word essay on specific subjects. |

Here's an essay:
Dear Hiring Manager,
You probably won't understand a word of this, but I'll write it anyway. I have a heartbeat and speak English.
Nuff said,

I had to write one. The owner was American, he just did it as a test to see that I'm not a complete moron.
I don't see a problem with it, most of us aren't English majors, yet we're paid to teach it. Seems like a reasonable enough request. |

a friend of mine once told me that these papers are what the school bases it's pay scale on, so you might as well try, it could affect your whole year. also, since you have a BA you should be fairly adept at pulling a 500 word A paper out of your ass.
hey OP were you were the guy in class who groaned every time the professor assigned homework, did a shitty job, then complained that the prof was a jerk for giving you a D? |

Why is it ridiculous?
You are being hired for a position to teach English, isn't it logical to test you on your aptitude in that subject? |

OMFG! A 500 word essay! That is SOOO unfair!
I think when I sneeze real hard, I shoot a 500 word essay out my bum -- but hey, better out than in, right? |

Had a student who tried that. Problem was...3 OTHER students copied and pasted the same essay!!!
OP: What the heck is the problem??? If you can't write 500 words about ANY given topic (even ones you don't know s@it about!) then why in the heck would someone want to hire you??? |

The problem is that when you are applying for loads of jobs this is too time consuming and tedious. |
