I'd like to get a new monitor for my computer and am leaning towards getting a 17" LCD. Does anyone have any advice what I should be looking for or prices I should be paying? Any and all words of wisdom are welcome.
Thanks in advance for the advice... |

I just bought one a couple months ago. I paid about 600,000 including delivery. I am very happy with it along with my digital video card. I'll try to find the website. It is from a place in Yongsan, but you can order it online and they will deliver. |

Thanks for the replies so far.
Does anyone have any recommendations about specs of an lcd monitor? What sorts of things should I be looking for? Does anyone have a specific monitor to recommend? |

I didn't learn this until after I bought mine...
LCD monitors run best at what's called their "native resolution". Most 15" LCDs look their best at 1024x768, while the 17" LCDs look their best at 1280x1024.
At most any other resolution than their "native" resolution, the LCD monitor will look blurry and crappy compared to a standard monitor.
Just keep this fact in mind if you intend on switching between resolutions on your LCD monitor.
Another note: Digital is really awesome looking compared to Analog. I have a bit of a problem in my cord (I think), so my digital sometimes shows thin red lines in dark purple areas -- doesn't occur enough to bug me too much though. |

I just got a new 17" lcd this week -- what a treat to the eye!
A friend advised me to get one with DVI. Not sure what that means (I'm a technomoron) but he said it might make for clearer viewing.
I went for the cheapest unit I could find on-line (brand is "Mbest") & apparently it can be serviced in my backwater if needs be. Cost including delivery just under 440000. |

Ok!
Your regular VGA signal has actually been passed through a Digital to Analogue converter. The DVI outlet is a straight through digital signal, so if your LCD has a DVI in, you will have the best possible signal. There is a difference between DVI-D and DVI-I, so make sure you know which ones you are buying.
Look for low response times (<20ms is very good, <15ms is fantastic). This pretty much indicates the "lag" on the display. As a gamer, I wouldn't be happy with anything over 17ms, otherwise you will get the blurry "Grand Theft Auto" look.
Also look for good brightness, and when you get home, turn on the monitor on a blank, black screen. Look for oddly coloured pixels. These are "dead" pixels and certain manufacturers will respond to them in different ways. Some will offer a money back, no questions asked guarantee, while some will only offer a return if they are within a specific area at a specific concentration (eg 0.25 per square inch etc).
Be an informed customer!
And enjoy the new screen.. :)

If you look at 15" monitors, I was impressed with the size and display of the TGIC models, for the price.
My LCD is an MTN model. I spent 3 hours looking around Yongsan before I bought this display model (the last one). I bought it because it perfectly matches the color and design of my case, has digital in, had a shiny reflective coating on the screen (many come with plastic you can tape on over it), it was 17", and had speakers inside (at the time I wanted that, but rarely use them). Price was good, too.
It's almost goofy how this monitor matches the case I own. Even more goofy is this LCD clock I bought from a street vendor near Omokgyo. It looks like my LCD Monitor, only smaller. I have all three (case, monitor, clock) sitting next to each other on the table.
I'm so decorative! |
