The missus and I are tossing around the idea of opening a small hagwon.
Nothing too expansive. Probably a single room affair, small classes, enough work that we'd make a bit more than our current PS salaries but neither of us are expecting to gross six figures a year.
For those of you who have done this, what has the experience been like?
Obviously, I'm not looking for an in-depth account of your successes and strugles. Just a general account of your experiences.
Thanks dudes and dudettes!

If she is then you need to register a business.
Then you need to get a business license.
Then you need to get your education permit (meaning you have to have the school plans, location, etc. approved by the local MOE).
First stop is the GU-office.
Next stop is the MOE.
Start jumping through hoops.
You should be able to complete the process in 6-12 months.

Thanks, ttompatz.
Is this something with which you've had personal experience?
I know that every situation is unique, and each prospective entrepreneur is saddled with his own quirks and abilities, so that the question "What has your experience been like?", is vague nearly to the point of being meaningless, even so, if you've done the hagwon thing what has your experience been like? |

My wife (Korean) and I have owned a hagwon here for over 8 years now.
You won't be able to open a one room hagwon. There a certain size critieria that must be met.
If you're thinking of a study room, then you're not allowed to have a foreigner teach there, F series visa or not. |

It's been a while since I opened a school, but as as I recall you have to have 30-35 pyg. of classroom area to be a hagwon. They will measure, so make sure you meet all the requirements or you won't get a license. Also, there are limits to the number of students you can legally have based on the size of the school. |

Sorry, it wasn't very clear.
Can you open a study room as a foreigner?
What I have read in the past is that this is OK but, as you suggest, you can not employee anyone else to teach in the study room.
From what I have read before you can get away with employing your wife as admin. Is this your understanding or have I read incorrectly in the past. |

As said above, if it's a study room then only a Korean can teach there even if a foreigner owns it. Study room = no foreigners can work there.
If it's a hagwon, then Koreans and foreigners alike can work there. Hagwon = Koreans and foreigners can work there.
You can however, get a tutors license and teach privates from home legally but you can't work in a study room if you're a foreigner.
