|
|
Hi.
SMOE teacher.
Vacation is about 5 weeks. I'm doing summer camp for the first 3, then have from the Saturday after that til the thursday 12 days later available to APPLY for leave.
I thought I'd be able to take 2 weeks off in the summer.
It's only 6 days leave cause a day or 2 of the days during that period are public holidays.
School is back on a Thursday which means I'll get just 1 and a half working weeks off IF THEY GRANT ME the leave.
Is this normal? Is there more opportunity to take the rest of my leave in Winter?
Even if there is, the thoughts of only having 1.5 weeks off between now and January is disheartening. |

Well, you'll also get Chuseok off - but yeah, unlike the spring semester, the fall semester doesnt give you a lot of breaks from work.
Your school should have a calendar of when school is in session for the entire year - you should ask them when you'll be able to take the rest of your vacation. |

Thanks for the replies.
So, when is the greatest opportunity to take leave?
December, January, February? |

What does your contract say? Is SMOE that different from EPIK?
We, in EPIK, get 8 days in summer, 10 in winter and 2 weeks re-signing. For a total of 5 weeks and 3 days. I've been here for 3 contracts and have never had a problem with when I take my vacation. I just tell my school when I want to take it and poof it is granted.

I think it is more practical to look at the TOTAL number of vacation days PER CONTRACT YEAR. You might re-sign, but that is a separate issue (and I don't believe you get paid for that).
Then take half of the total number of vacation days, and that's what you should get in summer and winter. With GEPIK, they gave I think 20 days. I only used about 6 in winter, so when summer was approaching the school told me I needed to take the other 4 or I wouldn't be able to use them because I still had 10 for summer. |

Well I'm supposed to get 21 days for the year.
So I thought that I'd be able to take 2 weeks (10 working days) in summer and the same in the winter.
But alas, because of camps finishing less than 2 weeks before the restart of school, I can't take a full 2 weeks off. |

Seems like a waste to try to use them all consecutively. You have weekends off, so go somewhere for week 1. Then fly back on the weekend. Do it again 3 more times and you'll have your 20 days. Leave the extra day or a few more in case you need to do something during the school year. In my case, I had to go to interviews for my next school. The current school at the time let me use those days as vacation days. |

Your vacation trumps English Camp. You get 21 days (that's in addition to national holidays). If they dont honor that, you can callI guess the SMOE office (I trust that works the same way as the GEPIK office). The administration would like to believe that its their discretion to grant you vacation time, but the fact is they are required to give it to you. Now, granted, they cant give you all 21 days in one block. But it should work out to two weeks in summer, two in winter.
If the SMOE, office is unhelpful, theres always the Labor Board.
Heres some info CentralCali wrote me when I had a similar situation (from this thread - http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=203252&start=15 ):
You have a contract for a reason. Jackass bosses are the reason.

I've posted it many times here, but here goes again. There really is a chain of supervision you can use and it will work if you use it:
 Supervising co-teacher (aka "handler")
 Department head
 Vice-principal
 Principal
School inspector at district Office of Education
Supervisor of GETs at the POE
That should be as far as you should need to go to get satisfaction. If that still doesn't work, then you hit up these two folks:
Deputy Superintendent of Education for the province/metropolitan city
Superintendent of Education for the province/metropolitan city
If you're still getting shafted, then it's off to the Labor Board. And not a single one of the people listed above wants to be explaining to their immediate supervisor why the POE's getting dragged into a labor case.
[End Quote]
Also you can consider processing your time off sooner. |

That's harsh. I get 8 working days in the summer, plus there's an extra day for a holiday. Then I get two weeks for renewing. With weekends, it works out to over 3 and a half weeks. Almost 4 weeks except one day of desk warming, then a weekend, and then back to school. I get 10 working days off in winter. So, it's two weeks or slightly longer if I take it with Korean New Years. Do you not get all your vacay days with SMOE? I'm in EPIK and never have had a problem. |

where does it say it is supposed to be 50/50 split between summer/winter? I thought it was pretty clear cut that its one week at most in the summer unless your school is awesome. |

One week in the summer? We're talking about public schools, not hagwons.
Anyway, it doesn't say in the contract about a 50/50 split, but they have to give you your 21 days within your contract year. |

I think the bigger issue here is whether you get to choose your holidays or if your school gets to assign them to you.
I am with SMOE. |
