A few questions about housing in the SMOE application:
If you write an address down on the application saying you already have housing in Korea, would you have the option of choosing between that and what the Employer finds for you and your current place later on?
Or if you say yes you have housing, does that automatically mean they won't be finding a place for you?
Can you change your request for housing after the interview process?
Are most SMOE housing close enough to the schools or over an hour of commuting?
Thank you! |

None of them are ever really next door. They're usually 20 minutes away from the school by public transit. You can state you want a position near your own housing but they might still put you an hour away. Really a crapshoot with SMOE. |

Do most people just ask for the money and go find a place on their own before orientation?
When would you tell them that you're going to be looking for a place on your own? When you receive your contract or beforehand? [/quote] |

My first place was almost directly next to my school, and it was terrible. You don't want to be right in the middle of all your students and their parents, especially if you're the first FT they ever have. Most others I knew didn't live so close, but still a 20min walk/10 min bus ride away. They won't take into consideration the address you put down unless that's a house you share with your Korean spouse. You can talk with them about it during your Skype/phone interview though and clear things up there. I agree it's confusing and frustrating because it's hard to find your own housing without knowing where you'll be working. You also have to look at it from their perspective having 1000s of teachers to place and knowing 9/10 of the schools are not in Itaewon/Sinchon/Hongdae and other desirable locations. If you just had to provide an address to get a school in a good location then everyone would just send that in. If, on the other hand, your home in Seoul is in an undesirable location then maybe they'll take that into consideration. Good luck anyway. |

Thanks a lot for the comment. I ended up just emailing the app without writing the address. It's too bad they don't tell you anything about the school or the apartment before you leave for Korea...
It doesn't really give me the chance to go to Korea and try finding my own place if I don't even know where I'll be working... |
