|
|
Hello, I'm a newbie here. I would really like to teach English in Korea (though Japan and Taiwan are fine too) for a bit after I graduate from college. Here's a problem though: I face the very real possibility of getting an F in one of my classes this year. Technically, I will have a C in the class, but the syllabus says I must fulfill all requirements in the class satisfactorily to pass and I kind of...didn't. I can't really retake this class as it's only offered in the Spring semester. I'm going to study abroad in Japan later this year for a full academic year, then expect to graduate in December 2012, making retaking it impossible.
The class is International Law, which especially concerns me. Will they look at my transcript, see my F in this class, and decide I'm clearly not fit for an international job? I want to try to make up for this by taking on an English Language Assistant position at the university in Japan (you act as an assistant to an English teacher at the university, helping them in class) and getting a TESOL when I come back. I'm seriously really concerned right now. |

Like for most jobs..not important.
Many new graduates overestimate the importance of their GPA.
I have been on hiring committees in Korea and now in Canada, have managed my own consulting agency for years (hence hired lots of people).
GPA is not considered in an applicant.....there are far more critical elements to evaluate. |

if grades don't matter, how come some applicants get grilled or rejected with a gpa lower then 2.5? |

I have never heard of anyone getting anything (grilled, rejected, delayed or fawned over) over a low (or high) GPA.
The degree is an immigration requirement (not an employer one).
The (university sealed) transcripts are simply to show that you have a degree (and didn't just print it off at home). The employer never sees them (they go SEALED) to Kimmi (and now to the consulate).
Grades mean nothing after you get the parchment.

that can only come into play in an excessively competitive market where two or more applicants end up with identical results in the employment selection process and some form of objective criteria is needed to choose between them.
Even then, something other that GPA would be used.
GPA IS used as an excuse to reject people that had far more serious problems in their application files however. |

There is an unofficial GPA requirement for public school. EPIK has an official 2.5 GPA floor and SMOE in Seoul has a 3.0.
Recruiters have mentioned this to me. They may allow an applicant a little below that IF they feel like it.
As for Hogwons, they could care less and strangely enough many uni jobs. |

Is this true? my recruiter told me that they had someone get rejected because of Fails on their transcript. I have a 2.4 gpa with 214 course credits but I had about 5 F's in a row on my transcript from withdrawing my sophomore year.
Do you think that will be a problem. I've already passed my interview. Just waiting on the docs to go through. |

I work for SMOE and my final GPA was less than 3.0, so that information is false. |

If you even suspect that there is a chance of failing the class drop the class. If you miss the last drop date and someone has died in your family or you have a history of depression or dyslectia sometimes you can drop past the official drop date. An "F" on your transcript is something that will haunt you for life.
BTW actually they don't pay much attention to transcripts in Korea you need the degree for a visa doesn't really matter whether you have a 3 or 4 year degree either. |
