We have kind of an interesting case, and before we jump in I wanted to see if the veterans here had any sage advice. The exposition might get a little long before I get to the questions so bear with me.
My wife and I would like to go to Korea to teach, taking along our dog. We aren't exactly rolling in money here though, so we likely couldn't afford to both go over to Korea on our own dime and live there while we look for teaching jobs.
Our preferences would be to find two schools in Seoul willing to fly us over and pay for lodging. We would request to pick our own flights (to make travelling with the dog easier, she's tiny and the airlines have told us she can ride in the cabin, not cargo) and be reimbursed. We would also turn down one school's lodging, since we only need one apartment and would request the school pick one where pets are allowed.
My wife has a B.A. in Journalism and a B.A. in Asian Studies with no experience teaching English. I have a B.A. in Linguistics and a B.A. in Asian Studies and have a little over 4 years ESL teaching experience working at a firm that teaches adult businesspeople in a 1-on-1 setting. We're both in our early 20s. We would like to make at least 2 million won each averaged out, since we will need to continue making house payments on our property here in the States.
For what it's worth, we'd also like multi-entry visas.
Which brings me to my main question - Is this realistic?
We've vacationed in Korea, but never taught abroad anywhere so I have no idea what to expect. I don't know if it would be best to try and work with a recruiter, find schools individually, or secure airfare and lodging for one of us, scrape together airfare for the other and have the other find a job as quickly as possible once over there.
Any strategic advice from people who have the experience will be really, really appreciated. |
