I'm thinking of buying an iPad 2 next week but can't find the answer tot his question:
Does the Ipad2 come unlocked, or can be unlocked to work with a Canadian/American phone company? Or is it locked to the korean phone system? |

Yes, it comes unlocked and it will work with AT&T and other 3G carriers, but not Verizon/CDMA in the U.S. This was confirmed to me multiple times over the phone by Apple Korea AND an Apple U.S. engineer who I had my call escalated to just to triple check this.
I bought one just the other week for the very same reasons but be prepared for the salesmen NOT to know this and to perhaps even insist they can't sell it to you because of this, as was the case at two of the stores that had an iPad but fought tooth and nail not to sell it to me.
Also, check your iPad for backlight bleeding. Mine has it, and the wait time to have it fixed here in Korea is a few weeks, so keep your receipt. Apparently the LG screens have a higher rate of defect than the Samsung ones, and from what I've read online since there's still a surplus of LG screens in the 64gb models (since those are the least popular). |

Short of disassembling it there's no way to tell who made the display that I'm aware of. From what I understand LG made a lot of the first several batches of screens and users reported a lot of defects. Macrumors.com has a user compiled list of some of the serial number series that have these defects, and mine is among them. Of course, Apple will swap it out, it's just that the wait time here in Korea seems to be longer than in the states, where it can be done in-store.

I should stress the backlight bleeding is *very* hard to see unless watching a movie, but it is there. Personally, since I dropped a pretty penny on a 64gb 3G model I'd rather swap it out for one without the issue so it doesn't affect the resale value a year down the line. |
