So i wonder if this means foreigners will be able to sign up?

Internet users will no longer have to give their resident registration numbers when they sign up to services of portals, online-shopping or gaming websites from September. The long overdue measure aims to stem the leakage of sensitive personal information online.
The Ministry of Public Administration and Security on Monday issued a preliminary notice on a draft enforcement ordinance to the private information protection law.
Under the enforcement ordinance, which does not require parliamentary approval, the operators of websites with an average of more than 10,000 visitors a day over three months must let subscribers use identification methods other than resident registration numbers.
The ordinance is expected to be promulgated in September after review and consultation among government agencies and public hearings. |

Well... We'll have to wait and see what the replacement methods are. The real name verification isn't going away. Sites will still be required to verify your identity, the new rule just says they have to offer at least one alternative method for verification. The I-pin has been becoming more popular lately, and foreigners can use it, which is a good thing. However, there are still plenty of sites that still fail for other reasons such as "Your name is too long" or "Enter name in hangeul only" Then if you try again and write your name in hangeul it will give you another error saying that the name you entered doesn't match your I-Pin. It's maddening sometimes.
So while this is probably a step in the right direction I highly doubt this is going to fix everything overnight. |

I'm hoping it doesn't become just a matter that foreigners officially can't sign up period.
My inability to get a Korean account on the PlayStation Network and use the DLC codes in games I buy here is very frustrating. |
