hi
my daughter is ready to start some Korean kindergarten and I have been told that the Korean government pays for the monthly fee for school.
when i went to enroll her at the school, the director said she wasn't qualified because she wasn't born in Korea.
however, my foreign friend has a girl in school right now and she was born in Germany. the govt. pays for that girl's school fee...
so i'm wondering if anyone else out there has a child who was not born in Korea but who is getting subsidized schooling?
thanks! |

Thats an odd response you got...
Check with the relevant government departement who deals with these subsidies, some schools may not know about them.
For the record, our son when he attended daycare and kindergarten was elligible for a subsidy. However, my wife is Korean so that may be different from a fully foreign child. |

Our daughter was born overseas, Korean mum, to get the benifits we had to register her birth here, now she has two passports, there was lots of advantages for us but we couldn't get anything without her having a Korean birth certificate.
From what I understood, 1 parent has to be Korean and one foreign, with the child being able to provide a birth certificate (Korean). |

as it turns out, the official word is that ONE of the parents must be a Korean national to qualify for free schooling...
oh well..... |

There is some subsidies available to foreigners, 2 x forgien parents, for what we saw you have to have a resident visa though, it's income tested and varied depending on the area you live in, i didn't really ask much as it wasn't relevant for us but if your happy reading Korean I can scan and send, just pm your email, no problem to pick up a copy. |

My daughter is in kindergarten and, if memory serves, only part of the fees are subsidized by the government. |

Before this year, it was a 50% discount. As of 2011, any 'mixed' child now gets full tuition paid for nursery school. It's intended for poorer folks, farmer-type ajosshis married to SE Asians/ former Soviet republics (??), but, we're ('Westerners') also included. We have a Nonghyeop credit/debit card sent to us that we use to pay the orini-jip every month. |
