|
|
A K-League soccer player alleged in the recent lottery/ gambling scandal was found dead in a Gangnam Hotel today at approximately 1:30pm (30 May 2011). He wrote a suicide letter apologizing to his family and his fellow soccer colleagues, while also admitting that he was 100% responsible for the recent scandal.
**I'm still shocked at how suicide is allowed (i.e. there doesn't seem to be much in terms of educating people that suicide is not a way out here--from a young age) and somewhat promoted as the more honorable escape and apology for wrong doing. It's so Imperial Japan that it makes me sick to my stomach. And the irony is sickening when you consider how many Koreans claim and fight to say they are Christian whenever I argue that they worship the church, not necessarily God.
I know that in the US we used to have a program called Suicide 2.0 that was used to rid people of the urge to commit suicide via a simple computer program. Though it wasn't 100% successful, with all the computer addicts here, why hasn't anyone made an addictive program that teaches that suicide is NOT an option?
Disclaimer: I don't mean to anger anyone or attack their belief systems, but I'm really sick of hearing about people killing themselves for no good reason. I mean, good lord...prison is not so bad as to kill yourself...(Ok it's Korea...I guess it could be...but man...this guy is RICH, why not just run off like those military runners????) Instead, when so many well-known people--including a president--kills themselves, it just teaches the kids that idolize them that suicide is a worthy option.==> A Cycle of Ignorance. |

Aren't you kind of missing the whole concept of reincarnation? For how many centuries has Korea been dominated by Buddhism? In that world view, this is not the only trip through this earth. Suicide doesn't have the same result as it does in a Western--this is the only shot at life you get ever--point of view.
While something like 1/4 of Koreans are Christians of one variety or another, it has been like that for only a few decades. The Asian reincarnation thing has been around for centuries and centuries influencing the social attitudes.
Anyway, why should Koreans adopt Western attitudes? It isn't like Westerners don't off themselves left and right. Check out the Scandanavians--close to 24-hour nights filled with hot blonde babes and they still kill themselves at world record rates.

It's not that I'm recommending suicide, but that statement is silly. Suicide is the ultimate out. |
