My contract finishes at the end of August but I would like to stay in Korea for a couple extra months to just hang out and travel. Do I need to extend my visa as a tourist? What if I just don't do anything and leave when I want to leave? How much of an extension would they even grant me if I asked? Who do I ask?! Any help on this matter would be appreciated!

Also, is it common to ask your employeer to just give you the money for your flight home instead of them buying one for you? I would love to just book it on my own in my own time. Thanks!

I don't know if vacationing is a reason that immigration will accept for a visa extension. I almost had to get an extension and it would have required a letter from the school explaining why.

You can get up to a 30 day extension of departure for free when you go to immgration and apply with an outgoing plane ticket. The extension will be good until the date on your ticket.

If you want longer than 30 days, you can just hop the ferry to Japan. Turn in you Alien Resident Card on the way out and then when you get to Japan, turn around and come back. You will re-enter korea as a tourist. Americans get 90 days, Canadians get 180 days, not sure about other nationalities.

The money for your ticket is between you and your employer. Negotiate something.

Thanks for the help. I guess my real question here is why should I leave the country and come back? What's stopping me from just staying as long as I want?

Like Orculis said you can get up to 30 days extension on your current visa if your outgoing ticket is dated properly.

After that you need to leave or face bying hefty overstay fines when you do leave. These fines add up on a daily basis (each day of overstay costs you X amount). Then when you do leave, you have to pay this fine on the spot or you will be detained until you pay up.

Why do you need to exit Korea?

To renew your permission to stay.

So you hop over to Japan and come back as a tourist for however long your countries visa agreement for Korea is.

As a tourist however, to enter, you will need an outbound ticket.

By the way, no country on earth allows foreigners to stay on their soil for as long as they want with no valid visa.

If you were staying in a country with no EXIT CHECK, there would be little chance immigration would ever know about an overstay, and you could just leave when you felt like it.

However, korea does EXIT CHECKS, meaning when you leave, you will be questioned on your status.

Don't mess around with this in Korea, get your extension from immigration or leave the country and re-enter.

Interesting.

I figured all countries did a certain amount of exit checking, especially for foreigners holding visas.

Extend your visa for 30 days. Go to Japan and back and get more time.

Do NOT stay past your visa expiration date. It's not worth it.

Delays at the airport and small fines for a short overstay.

Large fines that grow daily.

Possible time in lockup while you get the money to pay. You will not be released until you pay.

Deportation.

So, nothing really to stop you, just consequences after the fact.

Think of it like paying for a night at a hotel. Check out is 11 AM the next morning, yes you are in your room, what's stopping you from leaving? What happens if you don't check out on time?

In Korea, serious problems with immigration, very possibly detention and fine. Korea is definitely not Thailand of Taiwan.

Every country I've been to does. In fact without an exit stamp you might have trouble crossing the border.

What if you do this, go to the airport go through immigration and all that and simply not board your plane? Will they expect you to get another flight immediately or give you more time (like 3-5 days)?

You cannot comeback through customs once you cross.

If you refuse to board you :

1- lose your ticket and will need to buy another one

2- Are stuck in the terminal and once it closes you may have legal troubles as you have no visa, no outbound ticket.

Why would anyone do something as dumb as this anyway?
