I saw the same thing happen in La Festa and Western Dom in Ilsan. You shouldn't have much sympathy for them. The street vendors don't pay taxes and they clog the streets selling junk.

Street vendors operate outside of Chaeb... err... Government control, and need to be removed immediately. |

Clear them out. They are a nuisance and they impede. Time to get hardcore with them. Wipe all 78 stalls out...all of them. |

I, for one, would miss some of the street vendors. I think that we should let anyone who is selling traditional crafts or food stay. Sure, clean out the guy selling pirated DVDs, but leave the vendors who bring something to the table.
I've bought a lot of stuff from them and would miss what they bring to the table. |

"Culture" is used at every turn it seems, to justify any manner of illegality. |

Wait tell you behold Thailand. You'll then know the word nuisance in its full meaning. |

I like the authorities' stated reason for going after the stalls: can't go after the store owners for blocking the sidewalks until they get rid of the stalls blocking the sidewalks. Hah! Here's a thought: cite them both. And for the stalls selling cooked goods, hit them up for operating without a health inspection (or whatever it's called here). And jack up the fines. That's starting to work with the idiots blocking the emergency vehicles--lousy 30k won fine didn't make anyone bat an eye but 300k and all of a sudden other people's lives are important!

Insadong should also consider closing that street off to cars on weekends. |

Let them stay. Its probably the only way for many of them to make a living. |

I like how they say: "it's part of the culture."
Every culture in the world has/had street vendors! In the West, we got rid of them but it's safe to say, where there are human settlements there will be people trying to sell cheap wares for whatever reason. Just like how where you have a human settlement you also have prostitution.
Get rid of them, I say. If they had good selections and better prices then I'd be fighting for them but this is rarely the case. |
