Do women carry mace or pepper spray in Korea? If so, can anyone tell me where to find it and what it's called?

Had an experience today with a nasty couple of middle-aged men who stopped their car in the middle of a cross walk I was trying to go across and they tried to get me into their car. Obviously it was extremely unpleasant and scary, and after that I feel like I need something stronger than a "F*** off!"

Any other women have an experience like this? I'm still a newbie here and if this is common for women walking through town alone (not even at night, I'm talking 8:30 a.m.) I might have to reconsider how long I'll be staying here.

Well, I'm not a woman but, as far as I'm aware, it's not a common experience at all - especially that early in the evening. However, women do need to be more careful here than guys do. Most Korean women I know have had some experience of being followed, or being confronted by a flasher.

I don't know about the sprays (I believe they may be illegal - not sure about that) but you should be able to find personal alarms somewhere. Be safe, but try not to let this ruin your time in Korea.

Small water spritzer (about 1,000 won), some tabasco and water, and you're set.

Seriously, macing someone is probably going to be more trouble than it is worth.

It would be nice if someone familiar with Korean law could elaborate on "Self defense" laws in Korea. Knowing Korea, you would get assaulted and defend yourself with Mace. Only to be sued the next day by the assaulter.

Heheh, everyone know foreigners can't eat spicy food. Tabasco in the face should be like a cool morning breeze to the average Korean. Laughing

Exactly. I would imagine, in theory, the Korean laws in this area are quite similar to our home countries, but in practice they are probably a lot different.

No link available, but I read in the news about a year or two ago that simply carrying pepper spray in Korea is very illegal and carries a prison term of up to 10 years.

I know this sounds like a joke. It's not.

I believe AsiaESLbound (or something like that) on here had a similar experience. Not sure if this user is a man or a woman though.

Get a taser, that's the way to do it.

If mace is illegal, I can't see a taser being allowed.

Unless you're McGyver, don't even think about using that. As funny as it might be to imagine using a water spritzer to mace someone it's not likely to work well. It could even make your situation worse.

Mace/pepper spray cannisters are under high pressure and designed to propel a large amount of the the spray a good distance at high speed. Even if you sprayed pure tobasco sauce it's not going to have nearly the same effect on your attacker. You would have to be a lot closer to use it and your attacker may close his eyes when you spray - and avoid getting the sauce in his eyes. Ya, you might get him and be able to buy a minute to escape, but I think that more likely you'd just piss him off.

Find out from the police if real mace is legal here.

Carry a hard metal flashlight in your purse. Look up self-defense flashlights.

Or a whistle.

And remember to keep your purse free of junk. It won't help much to rifle around in your purse for 5 minutes if someone is attacking you.

Best bet for both a man and a woman is to run away. If you have time to fiddle with pulling out something, you probably have time to run away.

http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/ Follow these rules and you won't even get approached by criminals.

Always carry Kimchi Chilly Powder in your pocket, so you can quickly reach in and throw it in the assailants face. Very Happy
