Can anyone recommend a good coastal town to visit?
Not Busan or Ulsan.
Lack of English isn't a problem as I'll be with a Korean. Just a nice coastal town you enjoyed. thanks. |

I really liked my weekend in Mokpo. Quiet town and there are a natural history museum and a maritime museum right across the street from each other. Both exceeded my expectations. There's also some nice little islands you can visit right off the coast. |

I second Mokpo for the reasons stated above. Also, if you like raw octopus, it's the place to be. Jindo and Yeosu a bit further east-southeast aren't too bad, either. |

Goeje and Tong-yeong. Here's a link for things to do in Tong-yeong. You don't need to take the tour, you can do all the things on your own if you have a car. The cablecar ride is well worth it. The view is awesome.

Goeje is good for clean and uncrowded beaches in June, but by the end of July, fugettaboutit. It's a zoo.

Gangneung, Gangwon-do. Cute town, a few historical sights like the Ojukheon, and nice white sand beaches, one of which has a lake next to it. |

+1
Also, it's a bit far, but when I went to Geomundo several years back, it was quite enjoyable and very low-key. It's an island off of Yeosu. |

I just went to Walpo and Chilpo beaches near Pohang and they were much prettier than I expected. |

Yeosu's KTX station will open for business at the end of September this year, according to news reports. |
