All right, about time!
Smokers will be slapped with a 100,000 won ($91) fine if caught smoking at major squares in central Seoul starting next month.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Tuesday it has designated Gwanghwamun, Cheonggye and Seoul Squares as no-smoking areas.
The capital will dispatch patrol teams to the squares from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. They will use PDAs to issue tickets on the spot to those caught taking a drag.
Seoul also plans to expand the ban to 21 regional parks from September and 295 center-lane bus stops from December.
Starting next year, the officials plan to impose the smoking ban at 5,715 bus stops along pedestrian roads, 1,024 neighborhood parks and zones within a 50-meter radius of schools. Smokers caught in places other than the squares will also be fined 100,000 won.
Seoul promulgated a decree on March 1 to designate central Seoul squares as non-smoking areas.
We ask for the publics cooperation, as the smoking ban in designated public places is for the happiness and health of Seoul citizens, said a city official.

Smoking should be banned in all public places, and strictly enforced. |

I'm a smoker and I agree with this.
However I'd rather them dispatch a team to keep an eye out on people who break driving laws.
If they charge 100,000 for skipping a green light or stopping infront of where they are meant to, the government would be friggin rich!! |

will dispatch patrol teams |
so when the old half drunk ajossi tell the Patrol team 25 year old kid to take a hike! then what?
or what about the mentally ill homeless people who drink and smoke around there? gonna give them tickets?
what about foreigners who have no idea?
how will they enforce 6000 bus stops, 30 parks etc???
I have an idea!
Ban smoking all together and make it an Illegal drug like Marijuana and treat it as such. that will solve the problem. |

I think that it would be smarter to allow smoking but only fine those who throw their cigarette butts on the ground. |

I'd like to echo the "I'll believe it when I see it" sentiment that has already been expressed in this thread. It would be nice, though... |

No, just the smoking. The four mentioned above have no negative impact on my health. |

Ok I'll bite. Looks like its gonna be a very rare friday night at home tonight.
How about cars? Should they also be banned? They have a negative impact on the public's health. |

Cars acquire a task, what does smoking do? Right it helps people relax, something they can do away from others. |

Cars can be replaced - alternatives can be used. Why not use them? Right, it's too inconvenient. |

cars don't kill. drivers do.
how can governments stand back and let people get addicted to tobacco and eventually die from it?
but then they say Marijuana should be illegal! |

I don't think it matters that cars fulfill a task and cigarettes don't......the end result is the same. They both pollute the air. So, to be consistent, the Seoul government should also pedestrianize the areas they want to ban smoking in.
Is there any point banning cigarettes when you're choking on exhaust fumes?
The last time I went to Myeong-dong I spent a really horrible 10 minutes walking down a street so crowded with people AND cars that no one could really move and I had to push past dazed teenagers to get my 2 year old daughter out from the exhausts of a dozen Starex's and bongo trucks.....not a Korea sparkling moment. |

It seems a bit odd to go for enforcing smoking bans while allowing drivers to do pretty much whatever they damn please. |
