Hi, does anyone know what the cause of this is?

My hard disc used to connect instantly to my computer, and allow me to view all the stuff on it.
After about a year, it started to beep and lose connection occasionally.

Now it flicks on and off and beeps all the time. It is impossible to view anything at all.

anyone else have this problem?

What kind of HD? Is it a portable USB magentic drive or a flash USB memory thumb drive? Or is it something else like firewire or Esata?

Well how does your drive get power? Is it supposed to get the power from the USB or does it get it thru a power cord.

How is it connected to USB? Is it thru a hub (USB extension) if so it might not be getting enough power. The more direct connection to your computer the better.

Sounds like either a dead drive or a dead case. If you have another case, put the hard drive in that case and see if it works. Or, if you have another hard drive, put it in the current case and see if it works. It should at least tell you which one is the problem, drive or case (pray it's the case).

I've had this happen to me twice. If I remember correctly, when I had beeping it was a dead case. When I had clicking and beeping, it was a dead hard drive.

I worked for fine last week, but this was after about an hour of waiting for it to stop beeping.

I've only had the thing for 2 years Rolling Eyes

Well HD that are magnetic do wear down. What is the behavior of the HD in other computers. Beeping too. If the beeps happens on other computers then very likely your drive is starting to die and you should consider moving everything to a new drive. If just your computer as above your HD is not getting enough power from the USB. The more direct connection to a computer the more likely it will get enough power. But along the cord or even using a hub can affect the connection.

Is your computer old maybe you USB port is starting to die or just something is not set up.

Also what kind of computer laptop or desktop? With desktop maybe your power supply is overloaded (likely not) if laptop try turning off the computer and pulling out the plug and battery for a few minutes. Weird as it sounds USb ports can build up some sort of charge that messes with things.

Apparently problem solved: I simply tried a different USB cable.

So far its fine. Dramatic improvement. Thank God.

The cable that works is 2m as opposed to the old 1m cable. It also has two (what are they, insulators? transmitters?- you know the round cylindrical devices) as opposed to one. But as far as I know all USB cables are interchangeable so long as they bear the same trident mark and of course connector plug.

So yeah..thanks for your help:)
