I'm super p'd off right now. Groupon has this deal that I really, really want, but I can't buy it. Why? Because I can't sign up for the site. Why? Because I'm an effing foreigner, that's why!

I guess that foreigners can, technically, sign up for Groupon. But when I try to sign up for a membership (with my Korean co-worker's help), it keeps giving me an error code because apparently my name and ARC number don't match. I've tried inputting my name in both English letters and Hangeul, with my last name first, with my first name first, with my middle name, without my middle name, etc. So yeah, I'm also angry with immigration because they probably put my name down wrong in the ID database.

Ticketmonster lets me sign up with them, though, so why can't the other sites? And the real kicker is that even though I couldn't get a membership, Groupon saved my e-mail address anyway, and every other day I receive a list of deals that I can't get. Thanks Groupon!

I remember reading and posting on a thread about how Groupon isn't doing too well in Korea. Well, maybe there's a reason for that!

It seems that most sites don't take foreign IDs. And I guess I wonder WTF Pizza Hut needs my national ID so I can get a pie.

Does tracking my pizza consumption really somehow increase national security?

I agree...it sucks that I can't utilize any of the Korean internet websites because I'm a foreigner. I mean EVERYTHING on the Korean net...you can't games, order food, shop online, order books, etc. It's fucking annoying.


But Groupon is doing horrible overseas too. They filed an S-1 with the SEC but what's funnier is that the top dogs already cashed out millions already. They've been losing money all year.

I can sign up for some Korean sites, like Ticketlink and Ticketmonster. Too bad Ticketmonster almost never has the deals I want.

The worst part is that when you go to Groupon's registration page, there's a "위국인" option but it still doesn't work! It says that my name doesn't match my ID number. Like I said, I've tried inputting my name in both English and Hangeul. So basically, Groupon says they accept foreigners, but really their system isn't set up for us. It's infuriating, especially because I'm a Meetup organizer and the members of my group expect discounts on everything.

I was able to sign up for Groupon, although I kind of wish I hadn't, what with the daily e-mails. And I'm a foreigner.

위국인 or 외국인? haha i actually get the coupons and all but i never buy them, my gf (korean) gets them and they go straight to her phone, but maybe i will try tonight and see what happens

I use Groupon for my hometown deals and internet deals, no problem.
Maybe try signing up as though from your hometown?
