If I sent my child/children to a hakwan I would want to know or at least meet the NET that teaches my child/children.
After several months working here I haven't met anyone.
Why such indifference among the parents? |

| Hagweon (not hakwan, and Korean loanwords in English aren't usually pluralized) are not schools. Hagweon are merely paid supplementary classes. |

Because they're fully paid, the parents expect to be "better" than schools. You know, Korean parents don't have any faith in government-regulated education yet they hate the fact that elementary and middle schools are mandatory according to the laws regarding education. |

I think adding the plural -s to hagweon when speaking English is very common in Korea.
Likewise: noraebangs / ajumas / ajoshis |

It's the same idea how Japanese loanwords in English don't get any pluralization. I don't know but I'll stick to the prescribed form. |

They typically sent the kids to sevearl hakwons - for each core academic subject - plus extras like music and art. It isn't very surprising that they don't make personal visits to each.
But, I bet if you talk to the secretaries of your hakwon, you'll find that plenty of mothers call up - often to complain - about what they have heard the kids say about the institute. |

Yeah, same with Maori loanwords in NZ English. You're not supposed to use a plural -s, but the reality is bigger than the rule. |

Most of the mothers are making inquiries to the school, many. The Korean teachers and management handle this. You just aren't aware of it. There are probably many things you aren't aware of based on most of your posts. |

They're not apathetic, they're very involved. They call the school to whine and complain about all sorts of things. You don't know about it because the Koreans handle the parents. The parents rarely speak to NETs because they're unable to speak English themselves. However, they're much more likely to approach you if they're confident in their English.
Be thankful that you're not dealing with the parents. |

Aside from the language barrier, as previously stated they usually discuss issues with the Korean teachers or management.
In my case at my last school, we were forbidden from talking to the parents! I think they were worried about us stealing the kids as private lessons |

True. Parents are pushy and unreasonable. When they contact the school it is to complain. |

Foreign teachers are not viewed as people. Instead we are viewed as interactive tools just like computer programs and smart boards. That's why parents don't care how we are treated by the school. We are little more than furniture to them. |
