So after a year of avoiding video games I've decided to give in and pick up a Wii to keep me from going out and spending money. I'd really like to get a modded Wii so I can download games to my external HD and play them directly from there.
I've been doing a bit of research on the subject, but still have some questions:
- If I go to Yongsan and buy a modded Korean Wii will the text and voices be in Korean?
- How much will it cost me to bring an American Wii to Yongsan and have it modded?
- I have a friend coming from the US in a week and he offered to pick up a new black Wii from Costco for $150 for me. However, I heard that the newer versions can't be modded. Anyone know the deal with that?
- Any other things I should consider before I make my purchase?
Thanks for the help. |

the menus will be in Korean but you can hack the system software to change it to your home's region (U.S., Europe, etc). The games will be in the language you download them in (NTSC is for North America, PAL is Europe)

soft modded, maybe 30,000W

the blacks can be soft-modded (they can read games off of portable hard drives but they can not read burned games.

Nintendo is unveiling their new system tomorrow and will supposedly be available by the middle of next year. So, up to you if you want the Wii. I am sure you can get them cheap now.
Thanks for the help. |

So I just bought a Nintendo Wii from the US off of another poster on Dave's. I want to go to Yongsan on Saturday to get the mod chipped installed.
Can anyone recommend a specific shop to head to?
This will be my first trip to the area so any directions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

Too bad you already got yours. I would have recommended going to Songtan, near the Osan Air Force Base. Since they're used to dealing with the US Military, the modded Wii I got there was already set for English. I've had absolutely no issues with it, especially once I figured out how to take off and add games of my own. (Why? Why did they include a Dora the Explorer game?!)
Just be aware, if your modding is anything like my modding, game discs will no longer work at all. You're totally reliant on the hard disc.
And yes, the Wii is about to get a new model, but it's still got some good games. |

Yep, but I don't want to wait a year and pay top dollar for a new system and the games. Just looking to play some games at home and not have to go to a Wii bang to play.
If anyone can provide some info about Yongsan that would be great. |

Why do you want a modchip installed?
Why not just softmod it yourself? It is very easy to do. Just follow the guide here http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-faqs-guides-tutorials-only/60921-guide-softmod-any-wii.html.
If you still want to go to Yongsan, go to the game alley (near the Sunin building) and ask around. I had my Wii hacked there when it first came out in Korea but have been updating it myself ever since. I went to ING. It is the third or fourth shop down on the left. The guy there speaks English as do most of the other owners. |

From the research I've done, it looks like the mod chip is the preferred route to go; shorter load times and less problems playing downloaded games.
I was going to look into softmodding it as well, if the chip didn't do everything I hoped.
Thanks for the directions! |
