I've just been told that if I don't come to school on the school's birthday it will be counted as one of my vacation days. Has anyone working at public school (SMOE) been forced to work on the school's birthday?

| Who told you that? The standard operating procedure for a school's birthday is for all the teachers to complete a form requesting permission to "prepare lesson material at one's residence" and submit that to the principal. If your co-teacher is unfamiliar with that form (quite unlikely), go up the chain of command until you get someone who's got a head on their shoulders and is using it. |

| Thanks for the quick responses. My co-teacher is a twenty-four year old part-timer (i.e. hasn't passed the test to become a bona fide teacher) and only told me this about fifteen minutes ago (Saturday morning). I can't get in touch with anyone from the district office so I guess I'll be desk warming on Tuesday. |

EPIK added this clause to the contract last year for cases like this:
During the school semester, the Employer may allow the Employee to not come to work on the day(s) when the school is closed for in-semester school holiday(s), school anniversary day(s), etc., and these days will not be considered part of the Paid Leave set forth in the forgoing clause.
SMOE not so? |

| I wish that SMOE had something like that in our contract. Like most contractual agreements...everything is open to interpretation. |

I don't see how a school's birthday constitutes a day off. Sure, it's nice if they offer it, but I wouldn't expect it. It's like you not agreeing to overtime because you are busy or something. They can't make you do it, and I don't feel teachers have a right to take a day off because it is the school's birthday.
I would bring something to read, a movie to watch, games, whatever. There is no need not to go, and you don't need to waste a sick day.
You might want to just do this so when they ask you for favors, you can remind them, "Remember when you guys had your School Birthday thing?"
If anything, it makes you look like the better man/woman. |

What?! If the rest of the teachers are taking the day off why shouldn't you expect it? And what difference does it make if you don't feel teachers have the right to take that day off? |

Ok, be careful what you ask for. The days after that ONE day off, and the days before, are filled with the teachers doing a hell of a lot more work than what we are doing in the classroom.
If you are trying to argue equality here, it isn't going to work. If another foreign teacher gets the day off at the same school, then you can make a case for it because of the school's policy. It's not a national holiday or normally written in contracts. |

Because you need prior approval for vacation days, and it's nicer to use them in larger blocks. Most people don't use all of their sick days up per contract, and you can take those with an hour's notice.
I agree that the OP shouldn't have to, but it's an option. If this thread had been started earlier, we probably could have helped a bit more. I remember a teacher who posted about this last year, from Daegu, because the education office had sent all of the principals and NETs an email saying that the policy had changed, and that they'd no longer be required to use vacation days or desk warm on school holidays. I asked for a copy of the email and had a Korean friend call my education office and ask if it had been sent out to principals here, and she was told that it had, but that it was up to each principal to decide if they wanted to or not. I told my coteacher about this and said how HAPPY I was that the education office had sent out this email to the principal, and that she should make sure that the principal had received it (because he was the type that would never have told me about the policy change if I hadn't told him that I knew about it. Sometimes face saving can work in your favor.) Because of this site, I had a whole work week off for Chuseok instead of just 3 days. |

You're a native English teacher doing 1/3 of the work for the same amount of money as the Korean teachers. You are not being screwed in any way.
Suck it up and deskwarm. Its not worth the "political capital" that you will spend to win this battle. |

Two of my former coteachers made at least 3 million won, and were usually shopping online and texting during class. One made around 4 or 5 million won and only used materials from the textbook. She had been teaching for over 20 years and still said English-ee and page-ee.
I don't miss public school. I miss the vacations, but, when you like your job, you don't need is as much to stay sane.
EDIT: I didn't even get a chance to deskwarm over vacations. I had classes every day that I wasn't on my vacation leave.
