I have done a bit of fishing here. Mostly sea fishing as I live out that way but a few years ago I had the chance to participate in a mandarin fish (wth...?ssogari in Korean) derby out in Danyang.
Beautiful area, spent the night before the big event eating samgyupsal and sloshing back soju with the other participants. Up before dawn on the South Han River. Pristine water and great fun fishing. I didnt even catch anything and they hauled me up on stage and gave me a nice jacket and a pair of pants. There was a Japanese guy who actually caught something and he got...his fish. ^^ |

| I'd love to get into fishing. I did it on holiday years ago, and there are tons of good spots here. Do you need a permit to fish most places or can you just go where you like? |

| Koreans love fishing. Although catching anything is not important. Drinking and getting away from the mrs is the main motivation. Most favour fishing at fish farms. You pay a fee at your local reservoir, pick your spot, setup your beach chair with a parasol, angle your dangle, sit back and comtemplate something deeply zen like "what is it like to be free?" |

I often fish on the hangang. Believe it or not, there are lots of fish in the river and some very nice/quiet and kind of natural-looking (hardly any concrete, plants, trees etc) spots to be found.
I fish for the carp, as I did back in the UK, but often catch a fish Koreans call Nul-chi - kind of a cross between a carp and a barbel and some pretty mutant looking goldfish/crucian carp (Bung-o) too.
I'm not 100% sure or not, but their might be a close season at the minute, as I see alot of "No fishing" signs which were never there before, plus it's the right time of year for a close season too, so that might make sense. However, nobody seems to care and fish on anyway.
Where abouts are you, and where do you plan to fish? |

OP: look for the Korean 낚씨터 and 저수지. The first is a stocked fishing pond. As one poster mentioned, it is a great place to hover over a beer and ponder the big heavies^^.
The second basically means reservoir. Some of them are stocked and if fishing is verboten you can always try your luck where the water empties into the local river.
Or take a 3 hour bus ride out to the East Sea and try your hand at some pike mackerel. This time of year they are running up the coast. They are usually around a foot long but are biting like mad, meaning you can take a dozen in an hour.
Also we have salmon out this way. Cant beat that. |

| Fishing equipment as any hobby related stuff is super expensive. I've only done sea fishing and borrowed stuff from a Korean friend who took me. No way would sink a ton of money into obtaining all the necessaries. |

| I use 2 7 foot spinning rods coupled with 8lb line, and 1 ounce bombs, fishing in the edge and piling in lots of corn, spam and some worms for the hook. I use the spinnin rods simply because they were given to me and that as mentioned above, I haven't found anything in Korea worth the money, or perfectly suitable for what I want. |
