What are the "rules of the road" regarding the sidewalks in Korea? Do motorcycles and scooters have the right of way? I have become a bit paranoid when I walk on the sidewalks. It seems they come from any and all directions. I saw one kid and his mom almost get hit the other day.
Thanks

| As far as i kow, it is illegal for them to drive on the sidewalk. There have been crackdowns before... but as you can see, it's had limited effect. |

No really what do they do? I only ever see them as glorified crossing guards in my neighborhood. How about instead of raising subway and bus fares they give some tickets to raise some profit? |

I think it does as well. I've said that a couple of times to Korean friends. No answer. |

I have also asked, some give no answer, but some have said some decent things. People don't take them seriously so they are powerless, People are afraid they'll gain too much power, and I wish they cared more. All valid points. I'd just once like to see a delivery guy get busted for speeding through a park area sidewalk. |

About three weeks ago I got hit by a delivery scooter on a residential path while I was going for a run. I had my music on so I honestly didn't hear the guy and he drove right into me from the rear. Thankfully, I was only really clipped and completely uninjured. He got knocked over, though, and the food that was in his box got all sloshed around (I think it was Chinese takeout).
He got up and started screaming at me, gesturing about how I was walking and how I shouldn't run on the center of the path but on the sides. He wanted me to show him my ID and I lied and said it was at home. Then he demanded that I gave him compensation money.
Here in Anyang, there are residential paths everywhere that go through apartment blocks. There are these metal poles sticking up at the entrances which prohibit cars and up until this happened I assumed that they prohibited scooters too (especially since there is a picture of a delivery scooter with a line going through it at the entrance).
I eventually just gave him 50,000 won and he went away. I probably shouldn't have paid him I thought that the alternative was him calling the cops and in that case I bet the cops would have taken his side despite him driving illegally.
In this situation, who was in the right? I'd like to think it was me but this is Korea... |

You were hit from behind?
Wow, you just got massively screwed.
Twice.
How on Earth could you pay a guy for hitting YOU!
P.S.... um, if I hit you while riding a bike or scooter, would you pay me off, too? Please? |

I should've added that he wasn't alone. While he was yelling at me we kind of got surrounded by onlookers, most of them being adjosshi. I just wanted to get out of there.
If he called the cops I probably would have got arrested and then I'd have to explain it to my employer and god knows who else. |

I'm also in the Anyang area. I sometimes point at the signs and yell when I see them speeding through those residential paths. Its so infuriating. I would have never paid the guy. How was it your fault?
I saw a scooter a bicycle collision last year. Ugly. I hope the scooter driver got the book thrown at him, because it was a young adolescent who was just riding slowly in the bike lane. |

Sorry, this sounds like a sh*t situation but mate, how could you pay someone for hitting you?
In the words of that funny dance flick, 'You got served'. |
