From reading a few of the posts, I know there are some people at PS's that weren't hired/placed by one of the ministry of education legs. How does one find these schools. I've talked to some recruiters and searched the internet for ads, and they all tell me you must go through EPIK.
Thanks!

3 options:

1) networking. Move into a post by word of mouth.

2) look for recruiters who are trying to fill a specific position at a PS rather than recruiting for EPIK/GEPIK/etc.

3) the old fashioned way; boots on the ground.
Prepare a BILINGUAL resume and cover letter and drop it off at 10 schools in the area you want to work in. You will get at least one interview. Drop it at 25 schools and you can be assured to be at work by August in a school of your choosing in the area you want.

I was a private hire.
I found the position on the Australian govt. jobsearch website, it was advertised through an agent.
So i don't have orientation, meetings and training days (red tape) that all other teachers i know that need to do.

It's not impossible to find these jobs, but i have a feeling that schools hire recruiters to fill positions that aren't filled by word of mouth.

No, absolutely not. If the recruiter hires via EPIK don't waste your time on them. There are plenty of schools that hire directly thru recruiters, although maybe not in the location that you want. Accept another location that hires directly via recruiters. The same goes for GEPIK.

Find new recruiters. I work for a PS through a Provincial education office that basically has nothing to do with EPIK. Lots of places in Korea have at least some slots like this. Ulsan for sure, like another poster said, and I think Jeollanam does too. Chungnam, Incheon, and I'm pretty sure Gyeongsangnam do also. These programs are smaller than EPIK but there is a lot less BS involved in getting one. It seems like finding them is all about timing. Ignore the EPIK-only stuff and try to figure out where in Korea you want to live first.

If your willing to go rural. There's:

CEPIK (Chungcheongnam-do Province)

JEPIK (Jellongnam-do Province)

You could wind up really rural. Though, if you don't mind, the country side is gorgeous and they're generally much nicer people than the ones that live in Seoul.

I also want to apply for schools outside those programs, because I know people in Korea and want to work near where they live.

I emailed a bunch of recruiters with these questions
- I want to be hired in certain areas since I have friends in Korea
- How many months should I contact them before my desired start date

Korvia
- I must go through GEPIK/EPIK/SMOE if I want to work at a public school (I know people on this board is saying otherwise, but this is what they said to me)
- GEPIK does not have a deadline for application
- GEPIK will tell you when and where you are working (right away, I'm assuming?)
- GEPIK is only available through an agency
- Apply 4 months before your desired work date

Gone2Korea
- They said they represent some schools, they can't go and find schools at specific locations for me

Morning Calm Recruiting
- They didn't answer my questions, they just said they'll be happy to find a position to me and attached some documents for me to fill out (but I don't plan on applying any time soon, I just wanted to ask them some questions to see if they're good recruiters)

I also contacted ESLJobKorea, ESL Planet, Adventure Teaching, ESL Starter, and ESLAgent (but their email, [email protected], does not work, my email got bounced back). I also filled out a contact form on 2 other recruiter sites but I got a feeling that they won't get back to me because contact forms usually don't work. It's weird they don't have an email...[/quote]
