I have a Samsung Sens (older model) that I received from a friend and there is no sound whatsoever from the speakers or headphones. I can adjust the volume; it's on full but I hear nothing. When I go into device properties it says that all the drivers are updated.
Anyone have any idea?
Thanks. |

If it's not a hardware problem then you can uninstall and reinstall the audio drivers. Just because the computer says the drivers are updated it doesn't mean they installed correctly.
Find the drivers for your model on the manufacturers website. |

It sounds more like a hardware problem.
Sound is a pretty basic function of a computer (like recognition of the hard drive, CPU, ports, etc.). Doesn't Windows provide at least basic functionality for sound? Basic sound (just 2.0 stereo) in and sound out should be covered by the OS, right? |

The vast majority of motherboards with an integrated audio chipset (almost always made by Realtek) will have the Realtek audio drivers installed automatically by Windows 7......but XP is less comprehensive and will probably require the user to install drivers manually.
That's why I really recommend anyone still using XP and who frequently have computer problems to switch up to Windows 7. It means you can re-install your OS quickly and easily to start afresh. |

When I was in IT, about half of the sound problems we had were the result of a hardware mute button. |

I tried searching for the volume button on the computer but can't find it anywhere. I can't get in touch with my friend right now neither:(. I also just installed Win 7 which was when there was no sound. |

Eamo says that Win 7 supports basic sound, so it seems like you have a dead sound port. |

Well you say it is a laptop have you tried the function mute. Many laptops have function buttons on the F1 - F12 keys like turn network off on on modify screen, etc. So functions are software based and some are hardware based. Meaning that Windows say everything is fine but the laptop has still flipped some switch to turn off the sound.
Also consider checking the BIOS - sometimes things can be turned off that way. |

Well, Win7 should install drivers for any hardware released a year or two before or after Win7 was released.......the OP says he has an older model Samsung Sens. So it would depend how old it is.
With Win7 you can also use the auto update feature.
Go to Sound in control panel.
In 'playback' tab highlight whatever is currently driving the speakers.
Click 'properties'.
Find 'controller information'
click 'properties'
Choose 'driver' tab
Click 'update driver'
Choose to browse web for driver.
Windows should then find the latest audio driver for you laptop (if it's still in the Microsoft database) and install automatically.......but it's not guaranteed! |

This. There's almost always a function button (FN) on laptops. Look at the off color (usually blue) symbols on the keys. If you hold function and hit that key, it will activate that function. Some laptops have dropped dedicated sound controls in favor of the function keys. Hit FN + sound mute and that might fix the problem.
Also, plug in some headphones/speakers and see if you get any sound. That can at least tell you what hardware is acting up. |
