. . .even if you're finishing out your contract and are on good terms w/ the boss? Just curious if there was some sort of reprecussion for the school.

Laziness could be one reason.

Here no one really uses a letter as a reference. They make calls. Letters are too much work Embarassed

Offer to write it for them and they'll likely be all ears.

The only reason I ask is b/c the recruiter I found my new job through is saying I need to bring an LOR to Kimmi when I transfer my visa. I told her I won't need one if I go in the last week of my current contract for the visa transfer. This fell on deaf ears, of course.

Actually, considering how lazy my boss is, this might work.

Kimmi doesn't need it. No one needs it. It is a superfluous document.

This what I tried to explain to the recruiter. I don't know why she's insisting on it. I think I'll just get the info and documents together required for the visa transfer and go to Kimmi myself.

Don't you need the letter to release that visa to be used by another school rather than getting a fresh visa for the new school (which requires a visa run)?

When I transferred my old visa, my boss just really didn't know what it was so she gently refused at first. I brought in a standard one and got her to sign it. Maybe your boss is just lazy. Bring it to work and show him/her.

Here's the one I used:

You'll have to fill out the top.

Seems some responses to this thread have confused Letter of Reference with Letter of Release - the op uses LOR in his heading without clarification - it is absolutely necessary to have a Letter of Release for a visa transfer.

Many Principals, Vice-principals, and co-teachers don't understand how the E-2 visa system works. Many of them leave it up to recruiters to handle everything.

False information.

If there is time left on your ARC after your contract finishes, you do not need a LOR.

That's a big "if". You shouldn't just take a job because you can avoid one LOR. You may need to get one eventually if you pick the wrong school.

Take your time and choose a good school. It's better to get the LOR and then you don't have to worry about time constraints.

Thanks SeoulNate, my mistake. I've never done a transfer after having completed a full year or contract, and when I did complete full years a few times, there was no time left on my ARC. My Bad.

This is standard practice. Even if the person I'm asking writes in perfect English, I'm always asked to write my own reference letter. It really isn't presumptuous to approach somebody with a reference letter written for yourself, by yourself, with the "writer's" name and info already on there, and just ask them, sweetly, to sign it.
