what are some movies you think that every person should see?

there are movies that i'm *supposed* to see and have tried and couldn't even finish it. for example, indiana jones. maybe it's the kind of movie you have to see as a kid to get lost in.

anyways, i'd like to give these must see movies a try.

Everyone has a different definition of what is a "must see." Here is a list of movies you must see, by genre:

Comedy: Being John Malkovich

Drama: Shawshank Redemption, 21 Grams, A Clockwork Orange, Casino, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction

Film Noir: Pulp Fiction, Memento

Science Fiction: Twelve Monkeys, Gattaca, Contact, Alien, District 9, Planet of the Apes (1968)

Action: Fight Club, Matrix, Boondock Saints

Epic: Barry Lyndon, Lawrence of Arabia, Braveheart, Gladiator

Thriller: American Psycho

Foreign: Downfall (German), North Face (German)

That was off the top of my head... they're all very decent movies. If you haven't seen them all, get them and watch them ASAP!

cool, i've seen most of the films you listed but i'll check out the others.

i haven't seen gattaca, barry lyndon, lawrence of arabia and the foreign films.

funny that you only have one comedy listed.

Inspiration for Tarantino's "Kill Bill"-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_Convict_701:_Scorpion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Snowblood

These are both fairly graphic and don't pull many punches, so a word of warning to the meek and mild. Of the two, the second is more accessible, while the first one makes more sense if you've lived in Tokyo and hung out with bohemian types who were born poor and weren't coping the image. The theme song from the first one is also heard during "Kill Bill".

A 'must see' on account of the fact that Kaji Meiko is just about the most wicked female assasin (especially in "Lady Snowblood") you are likely to set your eyes on in a movie.

Loads of good movies mentioned here. One Korean movie that is worth checking out is "The Isle" (섬). It's a bit dated, but is different from the usual clap-trap that the industry churns out.
I'm a bit biased, but a couple of Aussie classics- "Two Hands", "Hercules Returns", "The Castle", "Bad Boy Bubby", "Kokoda" and, of course "Mad Max".

I'm a big fan of 3-Iron (빈집-Bin Jip-Empty Houses) by the same director. Next to no dialogue, but extremely well shot and is quite engaging despite its silence.

I have seen all of those movies. I don't agree on the list thought.
some of those movies are not that good, technically, photographically and narratively.

there are so many other movies which need to be on that list. and so many need to come off that list..
The whole nine yards!! really???

can't believe China town in not in the list, regarded as one of the best screenplays to hit the screen.
