I am very concerned about this issue: cold sores on my lip. They arise from stress or sun exposure. I have had them for years, I am learning that it is something that will come up on the medical test in Korea. Is it something for which they deport you, or just a reprimand, or take your medicine kind of thing? Seriously though, 3/4 of America gets cold sores (the herpes virus). Do all these people not teach overseas? Do I need to start looking at other countries, or will this not be an issue? Please someone out there help! I need to know a definite answer, nobody has been able to give a straight yes or no. |

I dont think they will test you for it. First off almost every korean kid i teach has mouth herpes. they eat out of the same pots here. Second, i went to get an STD test and when I asked to check everything (wild vacation) they said they didnt even have herpes as a test without doing a skin sample on an outbreak. They didnt have the ability to do the blood test. This was at an international hospital too. The good news, im clean. Well, hopefully, still. |

if the sore is a size of mosquito bite they'll probably let it slide. if it covers your face, you probably won't pass. |

I know of absolutely no situations in which a foreign teacher has been deported for medical reasons. I've been around for a long time too and worked around and with some pretty unhealthy people. |

Thank you, I thought it wouldn't be a problem, but I hear that Korea is so strict, I'm not trying to be deported for a supposed STD. |

If you think you might have an STD go to the International Clinic in Itaewon Seoul. There's an Kyopo who works there who speaks English without an accent. He's very laid back and will really make you feel at ease. I know a guy who had venerial worts burnt off there. |

Third thread with the same question, here is my response, copied for the third time. I hope your reading comprehension is better than it seems.

You already made another thread about this, which I answered.
Herpes is NOT tested for. Even if you have an outbreak during the medical exam, you will not get any kind of detrimental mark.
Not to mention that they would need to do a DNA check to even confirm that you have it, which again, they do not do.
On top of that, herpes in Asia and around the world is an epidemic. Somewhere around 70-80% of the world is infected with type 1 Herpes. You think they would deny visas to 70-80% of the work force that comes over here? I dont. |

The only thing that will get you deported in Korea is HIV or AIDS. Even for that they are not supposed to deport you (was some human rights thing a few years ago), but I would surmise that they would find a way to not let you work here with it. |
