Can anybody help a sister out about the gym situation in Korea? Google Maps is failing for some reason. I'm looking for something with treadmill, elliptical, and free weights. Anything in the Samseung, Seocho, or Bangbae area would be so very nice.
Is it true I'm going to have to pay a hundred bucks for a month membership anywhere? |

Here's a tip someone shared with me:
maps.naver.com and type in a nearby station and 피트니스, so for you 방배 피트니스. |

There's a gym across the road from the Renaissance Hotel in Yeoksam that is 50,000 won a month (if you pay for three at a time). My friend goes there and it seems like a great deal. If you're relying on the subway, the biggest disadvantage is that it's on the corner exactly between Yeoksam and Seolleung Stations, on Teheran Road, so 5-10 minutes from the subway.
To get there go out Yeoksam Station exit 8, walk straight for one big block, pass the Renaissance and cross at the cross walk and walk a little further. It's on your left.
or, a shorter route:
From Seolleung Station, go out exit 5 and walk straight for about 5 minutes. It's on your right before you get to the first major intersection.
It's in the Anam Arcade, in Anam Tower. It's the 3rd building on the north side of Teheran Rd from Onsu Rd (which is the one the Renaissance is on the corner of)
I've never actually worked out there b/c I live/work a little too far away to make it worth it for me, but it's way cheaper than what I'm paying and I would go there if it were convenient to me. Hope this helps |

ooh I like this tip, used it successfully just now.
looks like you can also use 헬스 or 휘트니스 instead of 피트니스 and get similar results. |

Here's another tip: PAY BY THE MONTH. If you ask me why, I'll let someone else answer that one, just so you'll believe what I am trying to tell you. |

If you're willing to travel to Yeoksam, the Yeoksam Global center has a fitness center for only 45,000/month. It's not a membership, it's literally 45K a month. It also happens to be one of the biggest, cleanest, and most elegant gym I have been to for that low a price. There are nicer gyms, but I don't feel like pay 1mil won a month for what is normal back home. |

If you're gonna be here for a while(even if you're not), and if you're looking to gain actual strength, just buy a bar and some weights and practice deadlifts and squats. For cardio, you can run outside or do burpees at home. For the most part, gyms are a waste of money. Machines in general are worthless and you can develop plenty of practical strength with just a bar. You can do plenty of different work outs using just the plates as well. If you're into bodybuilding, then that's a different matter. |
