My wife and I want to be able to use both of our computers at the same time. Yes, I know this can be done with a wireless adapter (for around 40,000 won) and we have tried doing it that way. However, it causes both computers to run very, very slowly, sometimes not at all. Probably due to other people here in our immediate vicinity piggybacking on our signal??

Anyway, is there a "Y" adapter that would allow us to run both computers from our one internet input wire? Maybe this would solve our problem....

Well, if other people are piggy-backing on your signal, then you haven't secured it. Where are you? What model is it? Do you need help?

You can buy just a router (no wifi) that will work, but all you have to do is secure the one you've got, or turn off the wifi function for the same thing.

You just need an ethernet hub....you can get cheap and basic ones in computer stores for 10-15,000 won.

you don't want a hub - you want a router. A hub merely allows two machines to have a connection but does nothing for making sure the packets you sent and expect to receive come back to the computer that initiated the data in the first place - ie routing the packets to the right place.

Makes sense......although I did use a hub for two PC's for a couple of years without any issues. However the internet was very seldom used on the second computer.

It's correct though that a router would definitely do the job without any problem.

A hub should be fine for them depending on how much internet they use (they seem to be implying that money is an issue here)

As far as I know, a hub just splits the connection in half, dropping the bandwidth for both computers. For light internet it's fine, but I would rather have a router which is faster and easier to customize (albeit more expensive).

A hub would only work if the ISP gives (or allows them to use) 2 or more IP addresses.

IF they are locked into 1 ISP address (the usual case) then they need to either:
a) get a router
b) get a 2nd network card installed in one of the computers and link the 2nd computer through it (simple cross cable and internet connection sharing). The computer with the 2 NICs will do the routing. (can be done with windows or Linux).

Why not just secure your signal? I run a few comps at my place (torrents and such), and have no problems with connectivity.

As it's been said, a router (with wireless or without) would be your best bet. Just plug the router into the ethernet cable that was originally going into your computer, then run two more cables from each of your computers to it.

For wireless you just need to set it up and secure it, please don't use WEP, use WPA2. Any random with some computer knowledge and a tutorial can crack WEP in 5-30 minutes. You should see all the unsecured and WEP secured myLGNETs and '와이파이xx' in my neighbourhood. Laughing
