I'm in the process of applying to EPIK, through a recruiter.
My recruiter tells me that I need a letter of employment history form the Hagwan I worked at last year, if I am to prove my experience (this will mean a pay increase).
Unfortunately, my former director has decided to ignore my e-mails.

Any advice?

Your former employer is required by law (labor standards act, article 39) to issue a certificate of employment for the period when you worked there.
http://www.moel.go.kr/english/topic/laborlaw_view.jsp?idx=254&tab=Standards

Article 39 (Certificate of Employment)
(1) If a worker makes a request to issue a certificate specifying term of employment, job specification, title and wages or other necessary information even after the retirement of the worker, the employer shall immediately prepare and issue the factually correct certificate.

(2) The certificate referred to in paragraph (1) shall only contain the items that the worker concerned has requested.

Go back and ask for it.

Be super nice about asking for that too. That's a wage increase you're talking about.

Are you sure they are still operating?

Are you sure that the director you are writing to is still working there?

Are you sure that the email address hasn't been changed?

There are many possible problems, and writing an email does not obligate a response.

The advice above to call the school and make a friendly, personal request would be best. This should be followed by a written request sent by mail. If you still get no response and want to force the legally required response, you will have to use a registered letter, include a printed reference and print out of the legal statute that requires a response, in Korean, and a letter politely requesting the letter you need with the information you need, in Korean.

Hopefully you left on good terms and the friendly personal request will meet with success, as that is far easier and a more sure way of getting results.
