It's being called the "poop burger". Japanese scientists have found a way to create artificial meat from sewage containing human feces.
Somehow this feels like a Vonnegut plotline: population boom equals food shortage. Solution? Synthesize food from human waste matter. Absurd yes, but Japanese scientists have actually discovered a way to create edible steaks from human feces.
Mitsuyuki Ikeda, a researcher from the Okayama Laboratory, has developed steaks based on proteins from human excrement. Tokyo Sewage approached the scientist because of an overabundance of sewage mud. They asked him to explore the possible uses of the sewage and Ikeda found that the mud contained a great deal of protein because of all the bacteria.
The researchers then extracted those proteins, combined them with a reaction enhancer and put it in an exploder which created the artificial steak. The meat is 63% proteins, 25% carbohydrates, 3% lipids and 9% minerals. The researchers color the poop meat red with food coloring and enhance the flavor with soy protein. Initial tests have people saying it even tastes like beef.

I feel...half-impressed and half-disgusted at the same time. It's a genius way to reuse waste and yet it is really, really, really, REALLY UNAPPEALING. |

I hear that scientists have also found a way to extract pure drinking water from toilet-flush containing urine and feces. In some countries, they've been using it for decades. |

This is an actual theme in a few SF stories. |

Cows crap in the fields and you eat what grows there. In fact, more fertilizer -> more yummy!
But seriously, must i give you any more reasons to become vegetarian?
Coprophiles are going to get really fat. |

1. Many mammals including apes eat their own feces.
2. What an application for long distance space travel!
3. The Japanese also created MSG and high fructose corn syrup: functional, tasty but unhealthy. I'll pass. |

Sorry but it's not the same thing. There's nothing IN the water that you drink from the purified sewage, it's all taken out. I'm not eating protiens and lipids from a colossus of dead bacteria taken from somebodies gut. That's too much for me, very gross. People naturally will have an eversion to that, and it's probably good in my opinion. |

What's for dinner tonight?
"Leftovers"
Seriously, if I was starving and someone offered me a poop burger - I'd eat the person instead. |
