Hi Everyone,
I am looking for recruiters. Some of them want copies of my passport photos.
Can these be used in any way to create identity theft?
(While I want to be as pro-active as possible in applying for jobs; of course, nothing is worth identity theft).
Thanks for the consideration. |

They need a photocopy of your passport to make sure that you actually have one. If you're that concerned, black out some (or all) of the passport number. Regardless, it's standard procedure. |

Yes, that's what I did. That being said, you will have to send a photocopy of the page that has your picture and info if you accept a job. |

They need the passport copy to:
a) ensure that you have a passport
b) you are from one of the approved countries
c) it has your age and place of birth on it (confirm your native speaker status)
d) it will accompany your application to immigration when they apply for your visa confirmation number.
No passport scan = application to the circular file bin.
Can they use it for identity theft = yes. All anyone needs to steal your identity are your name, DOB and place of residence. You are more at risk from dumpster divers at home than a recruiter in Korea.
Is identity theft likely to happen = no.

My passport has my place of birth, Germany, on it and nobody's ever batted an eye about my native speaker status. I was born overseas to a US Army officer. Every application for a job here I've had to submit has requested the name and place of my middle and high schools in addition to the colleges I've attended. If you've moved around a lot during your studies, that can be a bit of a hassle. |

And if your place of birth was in the continental US you wouldn't need to submit the school history. Just your College/Uni.
Kimmi requires those not born in one of the "approved" 7 to show at least 6 years of education IN ENGLISH and their degree from one of the 7 countries.
I have NEVER been asked for school particulars nor has anyone I know who was born in the US (or one of the other 6).

Hm, maybe it's just in Busan, but the renewal application form itself is laid out with a request for school info all the way back to middle school. They do not ask for any proof of that, though--no diploma, no transcripts. The transcripts wanted for getting the job, of course, were for university. Of course, I'm not going to discount the idea that BMOE (or any other P/MOE) over-reacted or over-designed a form in response to an Immigration requirement.
At any rate, I moved with my family to the CONUS when I was 2. Even if I had not, I would've been enrolled in the DODDS and would have gotten a US education. |
