|
|
hi all,
if any of the forum experts could please advise an educated estimate...
what are the chances of working for a public school that wont go above 22 classes per week? (ie what percentage wont utilize their clause to add the additional 4 or so extra classes...)
are there any provinces that have a reputation for not going above the 22 classes per week? as i would be interested in applying to those provinces...
thank you for any answers...

If your school renews you a few times, just say sometimes they can fudge numbers in your favor. |

I have never worked for a school that didn't outline their schedule and stick to it. Generally speaking, they won't make changes.
So ask upfront. Find the schedule BEFORE you fly to Korea. It might not be a bad idea to get a schedule BEFORE you visit also (if you are already in Korea).
Again, schools won't budge. Their schedule is decided well before you start, and to make a change in your favor means all the teachers at the school have to change their schedule. Guess who DOESN'T win in this case? |

The school's schedule won't change, but when to bring you into the classroom is extremely flexible.
Saying that, coming into a public school in the middle of the year they probably won't change your schedule, if they had a previous teacher you are replacing. However, when the new school year starts in March, it takes a week, or two, before the K-english teachers gets your schedule set, that's when you can make sure you are within the 22 hours. Most public schools will keep you in the 22 hours. I've been able to get as low as 18 hours (in years that they cut the entering class by 1), but usually I'll be in the 20-22 range. |

I teach 21 standard classes a week.
BUT, my POE also expects me to teach 6 40-minute 'extra' after-school classes every week, which would annoy me except that I do get 20,000/hr for my trouble.
Don't think it's terribly common in PS, but I have learned to deal with it decently well |

The school schedule CAN change. It happened to me... two years in a row(!), but it is not something that happens a lot, I think. I just got unlucky to get a very ... "annoying" new principal (my third one there), and eventually she was too annoying and I was very happy to leave that school after many years being there. |

The POE can't force you to teach after school. Neither can your school. Unless your contract specifically says you teach mandatory after school classes with a pay rate of x. They can pressure you and annoy the hell out of you and maybe use it as an excuse not to renew you while saying its because of something else. But at end of the day, they can't make you do more than your contract 22. |
