Can anyone give me any success/failure stories if you've checked your guitar on the flight back home/overseas?
I'm planning on using a regular hard case, not a plastic or flight case. I know the usual pack the peghead/neck with clothes and tape it up pretty good. |

Guitars and other instruments do get ruined, but not all the time. We usually do gate check for our instruments (the way people check baby strollers, etc.) you carry it to the gate and they hand it into the hold and you get it back at the gate. This way no conveyor belts, etc. But even with that a friend recently had a rare and valuable guitar ruined (it was set down for a second at the stairs to carry it up to the hold and she watched them run over it with a baggage train... not pretty). |

I had two cheap acoustics' necks broken. Both by Korean air. One on the way to Thailand and then the replacement I bought there on the way back. To be fair, I wasn't too concerned and didn't pack them as well as I could have.
I've had one survive: when I first came here from Canada in 2004. Air Canada treated it like gold. Fragile stickers all over it, not a ding or scratch anywhere on the case. |

I'm a Fender man so I take the necks off of the guitars and pack them well with socks and lots of padding. |

Hard case. Wrapped it up good. Checked it into oversize baggage, picked it up when I got to my destination.
No worries! |

i checked in my acoustic hardcase and paid extra for it. i also brought over my electric and stored it in the overhead with no problems. the flight wasn't busy and no one said anything. my friend said that if you're smooth with the stewardess, they might store it for you in their personal space. but weight restrictions seem to be a huge deal these days. |

I'm just going to wrap her up well inside the case and outside, spin some tape around it and hope for the best I guess.
I'm flying Cathay Pacific too, have never flown with them before so I guess we'll see how it goes! |
