So after midnight walking do the main road of Itaewon is about 5 (I assume grunts from the military). Why do I assume? Because as they are marching they are ranting at the top of their lungs ( I cant put it into words but I think everyone knows what I mean). So these gentlemen stomping towards the center of Itaewon and a Police car is pulled over to the side of the road. Not because of them. They are just off to the side of the road. And the next thing you know these guys are pointing and yelling at them.
Now before you start going: Hey if we left what would happen to them? Ask youself this. If Korean soldiers were walking down LA or Chicago acting like these idiots what would people say?
I cant wait for the base to be moved. I want a normal life and not be associated with idiots like this.
People treat this place as a toilet. No wonder we are seen as we are. Soldiers and one yearers being idiots.
Actually, some people hear have a stake in what they are doing.
Now please start bashing me. But if the Bristish were in your town acting like idiots etc would that be ok? |

Absolutely.
But its going to take a long time, if ever, for there to be a significant, permanent, population of expat westerners here.
Such a group would be able to gradually improve things by looking after their interests and assimilating to a greater degree.
It would also help if korea started to value the more experienced korea hands rather than constantly hiring only fresh grads. |

The main reason you have a job here is because of the US military. There would be no Korea without US military protection. You'd be in China or North Korea right now or back home unemployed and whining about something else, so suck it up and deal. |

Eventually move? Where to?

People just hate each other everywhere. It's best to avoid everyone at all times. Just stay away from people. |

And THIS got you all riled up? Really? That's all it takes?
Hell, I was in a hof with glass mugs and soju bottles being thrown by Koreans and had to go home because somehow I got blood on my pants. Thank god there were no soldiers in there.
I don't like being associated with pantywaists and people infatuated with the nearly nonexistent traditional culture of Korea, or the backwash that is Korean pop culture, but a paycheck is a paycheck. |

My comment was actually directed to Gem's assertion that the existence of all ESL jobs in Korea are due to the presence of the US military, and that if not for the US military this peninsula would be a part of China. |

And again you read but you didnt comprehend. They were referring to where the base should be moved to. Not as an individual moving to another country (like China) to work.

Your comments are quite strange. You are living in a country that is by essence infatuated with the "nonexistent traditional culture, or K-pop and you don't want to be associated with that. Well, sorry to say that this is the country. If you don't like that then maybe you should move on.
And again, you have only been here for a short time so you have a lot to learn. But we are put into a different basket and scrutinized by Korean society. But when idiots act up like this (and these are idiots who are temporary) that reflects bad on all of us.
But I escaped behavior like this from back home - loud mouth obnoxious idiots who think they own the world with no regard for others. So if you say that it gets me riled up is behavior like this, yes. Whether foreign or Korean. But guess what, the foreign idiots stand out more and guess what that reflects bad on us all. |

Actually you said "hear." I know it sounds the same, but...
I truly, honestly swear I wasn't going to say anything, but I saw this and I just couldn't resist.
Don't rag on me 'cause I'm being a stupid grammar nazi. Or because I joined only 3 years ago. Rag on me 'cause I'm trying to derail this unnecessary inflammation of a tired and bitter point of contention(or two, Itaewon and military folks being so fun to argue about).
Really, let's not keep doing this to ourselves. Let's have a meeting instead. Everyone that either loves or hates Itaewon can get together, have a drink, some food, and realize that most posters are much more reasonable in person. That would be so much better than re-hashing this whole thing.
Got any suggestions for Itaewon hot-spots where we could kick-off this shindig? |

I dont understand about the HERE/HEAR thing because I looked at the post and referring to Here was in the correct grammatical and contextual form.
Also, I wasnt talking about Itaewon I just happened to be in Itaewon at the time. I was talking about certain people. I wasnt being negative of Itaewon as such, so it might be a good idea to read what the original post was presenting.
Now, you can go to any of the usual hotspots around Seoul and you see the typical idiotic behavior. Now in this instance it was in Itaewon and most likely Military. Hence, temporary. Now, go into Hongdae and you see similar attitudes - whether military or short term individuals.
So I really don't quite get your meaning of your response. |

I first came to Korea in December of 2005. Don't nitpick with join dates. Dave's ESL isn't Korea.
And this whole "it reflects badly on us" is nonsense. If you think Koreans are foolish and immature enough to generalize the behavior of a few drunk idiots to the wider mass of foreigners, maybe you shouldn't be clamoring for their respect. Likewise, I can control myself and not generalize the behavior that I witnessed last night (and many other nights) onto the general Korean populace.
You also need to get off your high horse with your ideas about Korea somehow belonging to you because you've been around a few years.
Regarding here/hear, reread your OP. |

The word here or hear is not in my OP so I don't know exactly what you are talking about.
And yes I think Koreans are foolish and immature enough to generalize behavior. Otherwise all these extra CBC apostille notorization etc would not be in play if it wasn't for the actions of one (or a few) individuals.
Since you first came to Korea in 2005 I am sure that you would have seen or read news articles about generalizations of foreigners and portrayed in a negative light. I remember watching the police chief of Gangnam district saying that all foreigners are drug users. So when you have a person at this level making blanket statements such as this and believe that Koreans would not be persuaded by it, I think you are quite mistaken.
And it is not just this instance but many more. Think of America and immigrants. If an immigrant (and when I mean immigrant I mean Mexican) commits a crime, then many Americans associate immigrants as being criminals.
So, I think you response is quite juvenile. Because attitudes to minorities in any culture has always reflected of the way foreigners are portrayed.
And I don't think I am on my high horse. I am just pointing out the facts that I and many that I know who have a stake in this society have discussed numerous times. And it is forever frustrating. |
