My air conditioner is like 6 years old in my apartment and it blows nothing but warm air even at the lowest/coldest of settings. I told my co teacher(public school) and she said a repair was coming to look at it and that I needed to pay for the repairs.

Is this normal practice here. I'm renting the apartment, why should I pay to fix appliances. Changing the occasional light bulb and keeping the place clean should be the extent of my responsibility. Am I wrong for thinking this?

Yeah. In Korea, you're wrong.

The tenant is expected to pay for the upkeep of the apartment in all but the most major instances, like remodeling, or a new kitchen, or a new bathroom suite. Something like fixing an aircon would definitely be the tenant's responsibility.

Depends on the landlord.

I had a issue with my washing machine at my officetel (not provided by a school), the landlord said I had to pay for it. Argued and she agreed to pay for half.

Asked my Korean friends about it and they said the landlord pays to fix their stuff. Asked the neighbors also, they said the same thing. Even the guy who came to fix my washing machine said he rents a place out and if anything breaks, he takes care of any charges lol. He said my landlord must be a (insert bad word for females)
