Quick question for those that have been in Korea more than a year: My hagwon is telling me that the government wants to check on my health after nine months into my contract. Is this normal? I had a blood, urine, x-ray exam when I first got here, why are they doing it again now? My manager pleads ignorance, she is the only higher-up at my hagwon that can speak English.
I'm not worried about it, just curious. That is all, thanks!

Same thing happened to me at my hagwon. About 7 months after I started my contract I had to do a second health check, including bloodwork, urine sample, everything. There were others from my hagwon who also had to do this, but not everyone. It was a random selection. We were told that it had something to do with the health insurance and was required by the company. If anyone refused to do it, they would have to pay more for their health insurance, we were told.

I assume it's the same situation for my hagwon, my manager continues to say "the government just wants to check" whenever I ask about it. Is it that hard to say "insurance company"? Ah Korea....
Thanks for the help!

I've had this checkup before. It's part of the National Health Insurance program. (Your first one was only for Immigration for your visa.) Everyone insured under the program is supposed to have a health checkup on some interval. Preventative medicine is a good idea IMO. Koreans are scheduled for the checkups as well. Someone told me that it's not random, there is some rotation according to the Korean alphabet. If so, that would explain why some have to do the check and some not. Their turn will come later.

Also, if you're called in for the checkup you at least know that your school has enrolled you in the National Health Ins and most likely the National Pension since they're linked. Congratulations.

I know public school teachers are offered the free check-up, but I didn't know hagwon teachers could do it too........I know it was never offered to me in my 5 years as a hagwon teacher.

Were you enrolled for sure in the NHI during that time though? Probably not if that is the case. It is compulsory every two years at least and compulsory again once you hit 40 years of age. At least that is the case for public school teachers.

Yeah. I definitely had the basic health insurance that is compulsory for your employer to get......perhaps it was available, but just never offered to me.

My understanding is that not all health insurance is NHI.

i've never heard of this in nearly four years at different hagwon.

i've always had medical insurance, and i've always had my employers pay into my pension fund.

weird.
