My friends from Canada have developed a plan that starts from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok. We'd be going on the trek for 11 or 12 days. I don't actually care to spend much time in either Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, it's just for the airports... and we'll focus on the stuff between the big cities.
Any recommendations for what to do between those two places? I especially don't know much about Malaysia. I admit to even being surprised it is much more developed than Vietnam.  |

Avoid the southernmost provinces in Thailand. They are not safe.
Local curfews are strictly enforced.
Head up the west coast to avoid the worst of the trouble spots.

This has been a point of confusion with me. I hear "southern thailand" is not safe. But south west seems to be safe, am I right? |

The 4 provinces in the extreme south /south east (Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla) are NOT safe and ARE under martial law.
The west coast route is shorter and only passes through 1 bad area. Your best route is up on the E1 (south of the border) and then north on the #4 (after you cross into Thailand. Things can change so check BEFORE you get on the bus or just take the train.
As you get farther north you are fine (petty theft is still a problem but you are unlikely to be shot by rebels or trigger happy troops).

sounds like a cool itenerary. don't sleep on KL and BKK though, both are pretty awesome, definitely my favorite big cities in SEA.
i've wanted to do this entire route as well, but so far the only place in between i've been is Penang. i dug it quite a bit, especially the beach areas. aweome food, good place to tool around on a scooter, and a pretty boss national park that tends to be pretty empty, so it's like the opposite of hiking in Korea. |
