I like to happen on unusual wild animals & today I had a close encounter with a raccoon dog.

Shortcutting home through a chestnut grove this afternoon (in full bloom right now, pungent!) I passed a guy calling for his lost dog so I had my eyes peeled. I spotted some greenery moving & knew something was in there. Figuring it might be his pup I tossed a couple chestnut husks its way to get a look. Instead up popped this critter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raccoon_Dog

Just a couple meters away, we held nice eye contact for several minutes. Handsome animal.

In Korea I've previously encountered (talking about mammals here) water deer, wild boars, Siberian otters, weasels, chipmunks, & lots of those pointy-eared squirrels.

Others you've spotted?

I've seen blood splatters on the highway in mountainous areas, so I'm guessing those came from animals.

I saw some small reddish-brown animal running away on a mountain in Gyeongju. I'm not sure what it was.

Other than that I've seen snakes and frogs in the countryside.

In Seoul, once I saw a chipmunk. I think that's the only non-bird animal I've ever seen in the city.

One winter, I took my folks to Songni Mountain. Hardly anybody was there, and as we walked to Beopchusa we saw about a 5 prong stag with a white winter coat come running by. A couple maintenance workers were running after it with their phones trying to take pictures. I was amazed to see such a huge animal at such a highly trafficked place.

that's a pretty talented snake.
I'd have captured it and starting putting on shows. Wouldn't even have to chase anything Wink

I actually saw a weasel/ferret in Myeongdong of all places. I'm guessing it's a pet that got away, but it was huge!

Those squirrels are pretty rad. Like punk rock squirrels or something.

I've seen pheasants bumming around on Namsan in Seoul before.

"Sir, the power converters are failing!" the XO exclaimed.

The captain hurriedly replied "Switch to auxiliary control and shift the blaster shields to starboard lest we care for an unwelcome jaunt in space! We just might pull through!"

It was too late, however. The thrusters were shot to to hell; the crew was doomed to float in the lonely frontier...where no one can hear you scream. Because there is no oxygen. Lasers don't even make the pew pew sounds. That's fake. Well, they could scream on the ship. Until the oxygen ran out. But they probably wouldn't scream then anyway. Because humans can't breathe without oxygen. They'd be dead. Dead people can't scream.

....or can they?
