For a drink that's sometimes called 'farmer wine', I think many of us would be surprised to learn that the carbonated 막걸리 in plastic bottles usually contains the same sweetener as diet Coke. . .

No seriously, aspartame. Or as it appears on the label, 아스파탐.

So this drink we maybe associate with the countryside is in reality commercially produced in massive quantities and artificially sweetened. Like with most 소주, I think its cheap price is probably no great wonder.

What is that in response to, other than the fact 막걸리 is an alcoholic drink?
