Hey folks, this is the first topic I've started since registering an account so try not to completely blast me. 
I'm headed to Cheonan sometime in July to start teaching and I'm wondering if theres anyone who can provide some tips about the area. I've used the search tool, but I haven't found many people discussing living in the Asan/Cheonan area. I'd really appreciate it if anyone can provide some information about living in the region.
A few random questions maybe someone can answer:
Is there a place to watch American sports on TV anywhere in S. Korea? (NFL, NCAA, NBA) I realize the time difference has large impact on viewing live events in the US.
I'd like to know if there's a gym or park with a basketball court in Cheonan.
What are some of the better places for food? Restaurant and grocery.
I'm a University of Oregon graduate. Any fellow Ducks out there?

I didn't go to the U of O, but I'm a proud Ducks fan!
I do know someone in Bundang who went to U of O. |

My best friend lives there so I try to go down about once a month. Sports you're probably out of luck; your best bet is to go to some of the foreigner bars in Itaewon (Seoul) or stream them at home (PM for details).
As cities go, it WAS (last year) the fastest growing and 7th largest city in Korea (could still be true, but I haven't done any research). There are plenty of good places to go eat or get drinks (eating street in Dujeong is great for both, as well as the Yawoori area).

Will do. Once I reach 25 posts, that is. 
I'm pretty savvy with finding sporting events streaming online already, but does Korea block any of those websites we can access in the US? |

Cheonan was amusing back in 2001-2002 when I was fresh and had a circle of buds. It later went downhill when the "hot spots" (the chief being a place called Zed Rock) of the time started shutting down or changing management.
I haven't been back in several years except for the odd night out. It seemed like every time I came down, a new place had become the main one to go to, and the previous had fallen out of favor for whatever reason.
That said, check out the links already provided. One thing Cheonan did generally have is a fairly tight-knit expat community, maybe it still does. One plus, it's definitely more convenient now for getting out and checking out other parts of Korea. I mean, there was no subway line running up to Seoul from there.
Stuff I'd recommend:
- Downtown bus station for nightlife. Across from the bus station and department store, on the other side of the big road, are some alleys with lots of bars. I doubt any of the classics remain after all this time, but that was considered the area to head out and drink.
- I haven't been there in ages, but if you look around in Ssangyong 2-dong, another area with some bars and restaurants, there used to be a traditional-style bar which I know only as Bar 86. It had creaky wooden floors, tons of old posters all over the walls, and served beer pitchers in giant old beer/soju bottles. I'm planning to visit Cheonan just to go to this particular bar, so knowing my luck, it's already ancient history.
- Hyeonchungsa is a memorial built for Lee Sunshin halfway between Cheonan and Asan. Quite nice in the fall when the leaves change color.
It's grown a lot since I was there (Dujeong was a glimmer in some construction giant's eye at the time, never heard of it) so hopefully someone else has more up-to-date info. Or just check those groups and ask coworkers about cool places. |

| I worked in Cheonan for three years. Commuted from Seoul most of the time, but spent a few evenings there. The area across the street from the bus terminal/Yawoori had some decent restaurants: a somewhat traditional "minsokjujeom" type place called Todam (with good makoli and food), a solid Italian restaurant called Dono Marco, and a big, hard-to-miss Dalkalbi restaurant (the name escapes me). Blue Fish near DanKook University was often amusing, even if the food wasn't too great. There are also some cool places on the road heading up towards the big Buddha, on the other side of the expressway from Dankook. As for the popular expat bars/pubs, I imagine most have changed over the last few years; however, you'll probably discover them soon enough. (Finding these places is half the fun!) |
