Anyone know if it's possible for a waegugin to get lessons in any of these instruments? I have some experience playing the Chinese guzheng and I want to play something similar in Korea.
Any tips on finding traditional music schools willing to teach foreigners? |

If you are in Seoul, you might look into programs at the large arts center near Nambu Terminal. I don't remember what it's called...maybe just "Seoul Arts Center" or something like that.
They have, or at least used to have, courses in that sort of thing. I don't remember the details, but I have known several people who participated and I've been to a couple of end-of-the-course recitals, which were always interesting and fun. Everyone I know enjoyed the courses. |

Thanks, tardisrider. A quick forum search before I posted this topic revealed information on the place. It's called the National Gugak Center, and they offer classes every Saturday. Each "semester" is four months long and costs 300,000 won. Also you rent the instruments and hanboks.
Problem is, I'm in Suwon, so the nearest station for me is Suwon Station. That means it'll take about 90 minutes for me to get there.
Anyone got more generalizable info? Surely this doesn't mean that nobody has ever gotten out of their comfort zone and tried this?? |
