I don't understand how people are able to charge so much for private language lessons.
Has anyone on here hired a private Korean language tutor? Was it worth the cost?
I remember seeing an ad on Craigslist for Korean language lessons for 35,000 won per hour. At the time I thought that was ridiculously high, but check out this ad- it's double!
$40 for a half hour Skype session or $60 for an hour. Dear God!

| A Korean person would pay the same rate for English lessons so I guess they assume you'd be willing to pay similarly in the reverse situation. Get a language conversation partner for free. |

| Is it really that high? The Skype one seems out of whack, but for someone to travel to meet a student, those rates don't seem that high. |

Or, you could use a language partner exchange program and trade language lessons with someone for free.
e.g. http://www.mylanguageexchange.com/Default.asp
Basically, you meet up online and then arrange meetings, either online or in person. You speak in English for half the time and in Korean (or whatever language you want) for the other half.
These kinds of things aren't as structured as actual language lessons and the people on them aren't actual teachers, so it'll probably take longer to learn the language, but free is a pretty fantastic price. |

go to http://seoul.craigslist.co.kr/act/ and post on ad for a language partner. i now go to 2 different free classes twice a week and i have 5 conversation partners, one for each day that i'm not in class except for sunday. and i had people that i had to turn down (i think i took on too many people).
my partners have been forcing me to speak in korean, i have a tendency to revert to english... |

consider how much english teachers charge for private lessons and how many there are in Korea right now. I'd say that's a pretty fair deal.
The skype deal seems a bit shit but, $40-$50 for 1-1 tuition seems fair! |

my korean hagwon let me do classes by myself (the other guy stopped this month) so i'm paying 11,000 an hour for essentially private lessons. the only downside is that i don't have control over the material we're using/what i want to learn.
but yeah, 40$ for skype seems excessive |

the Skype prices are insane, but if that tutor has to travel a long distance to meet you, then it is normal.
Think about the amount of material you cover in a 1:1 situation. 1:1 tutoring requires a lot of preparation. There is less time spent practicing the same grammar structure because the tutor doesn't have to check over multiple students.
...that said, get a girlfriend or boyfriend and save the money. (unless you are unable to study around them) |
