I've got vacation the first week of August and I'd love to get away. Somewhere in Korea, and relatively isolated would be great. I don't care much about creature comforts, but I'm not prepared for a real camping trek(no hiking sack/tent..etc). I stayed in a shelter once on Seoraksan, but almost got turned away(the guy was convinced I was too big, and only relented after a frantic call to my Korean girlfriend). I know everyone and their mother will be out that week, but I'm hoping I can find some less popular place that's still pretty awesome.
Ocean-side, river-side, mountain-side...just no massive apartment complexes please.
Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?
No transportation of my own either. So it'd have to be busable/walkable. And I guess I could buy a tent. Willing to spend around 300k for the trip and gear. |

Kwanghwado. Clean air and water, ocean and mountains, and very few people (avoid the tours). If you can get out there, you'd dig it. You can fish/shrimp and camp out there. |

A guy I know on here goes motorcycling all over the place and camps out frequently. Apparently, camping is legal on all public beaches in Korea.
Do you have a bicycle? Personally, I'd find a place near the ocean and ride the bus there. You can take bicycles on the buses here, in the undercarriage. It will definitely expand your range, IF you like to ride a bicycle. |

Great thread. I'm interested in the same thing and haven't been camping much in Korea. Sorry I can't help, but looking forward to the replies. |

I recommend Wando Beach - it has plenty of nice camp spots and you can use the public showers (not sure if they are hot) also you can get there by bus and mooch food off of Korean campers - if you play your cards right you can get free meals from a separate family every supping time as long as you are willing to say hello to small children and call them cute. (try not to let them find out where you are sleeping or they may come to your place at night drinking soju and be very friendly and have you drink with them.) You should buy a lot of groceries in wando and then cook most of them their though there are plenty of minimarts around the beach town too. there are also some islands east of busan - the one with the korean space center has a island south of it that is ok
Or you could go and take a cheap ferry (around 50 thousand?) and ferry boat yourself to Jeju or that other Island north of Jeju - in Jeju you can camp at the beach next to Halim Park - that is the most beautiful beach in Korea and is on par with nice ones in the USA - but still short of Pallawan or Palau.
How was your trip to Surksan ... maybe I should go there ... or take the ferry to Japan again... anyone want to take the ferry with me the last week of July to Japan? we can hike Mount Fuji together and you can be my sherpa and carry my pack...
I want to help my fellow campers be happy fatty campers. I know maybe calling you fat boys is mean - but lets face it none of us me included is 4 percent body fat trek wilderness leaders anymore - yes I did camp with 9 15 year old urban city girls and yes I did day by day see to giving one birth control pills - however I refused to allow them to sleep with me in my 200 dollar one man mountain tent whilst they were all wet under their tarp. that was the stout 25 year ole lady co leaders job. (and you cant get hypothermia in 75 degree summer weather even if you are wet rat soaked). My whole point is is that I am a pro survivalist orienteering teaching ninja rambo who can kill a bear with his bear hands and eat raw fish eyes. I could go on about how I was a supa cool pro camper and hiker in da Marines and how I use to shoot lots of paper and toss grenades in the gulf or about my cool desert camping trips where I hunted with NVGS and killed lots of square oatmeal cookie bars spiced with clp and sand grit - but that is unrelated to the topic suffice to say I am a cooler camper than you organic eating hippie teachers who carry baby fanny packs and get lost on baby hills in Seoul. |
